JERUSALEM — Israel's
major record companies
have produced a variety of
albums to celebrate Israel's
30th anniversary.
The songs range from the
old to the new and if they
give rise to feelings of nos-
talgia, it is also fair to say
that the records point to the
trends and development in
popular music.
The "Dudaim" for exam-
ple are represented by one
song,, "Erev Shel
Shoshanim." The "Trio
Arava" by the "Cowboy
Song" which bears their
name, but which is not
necessarily their most typi-
cal or best song.
"Poogie," the closest Is-
rael ever came to producing
a Western-style pop group,
is not represented at all.
This, in part, is a reflection
of the folk ethos of most of
the -songs, although this
rule is not adhered to
entirely.
Another is that only
two of these records are
accompanied by the
words in Hebrew. Of
course the words and
sometimes music of most
of the standards are to be
found in shironim (song
books) which are gener-
ally available in Jewish
book stores or commu-
nity centers. Given the
often subtle and complex
lyrics of these songs, it is
