PHILADELPHIA — The
Jewish Publication Society
of America is inaugurating
a new series of books in-
tended for young readers.
The series will include
books on a variety of themes
for all children's age groups.
The first title in the series
is "Birthday in Kishinev"
by Fannie Steinberg, a story
of faith in the face of tribu-
lation, set against the back-
ground of the Kishinev pog-
rom of 1903. It is illustrated
by Luba Hanuschak.
In addition to "Birthday
in Kishinev," the JPS will
release four more titles in
its new series for young
readers. Scheduled for pub-
lication next month, is "The
Secret of the Sabbath Fish"
by Ben Aronin, with illus-
trations by Shay Rieger
(ages 5 to 9), a picture-book
recounting of the origin of
gefilte fish.
Planned for Summer
1979 publication are two
imaginative reworkings
of Jewish folk material:
"Nicanor's Gate" by Eric
A. Kimmel, illustrated by
Jerry Joyner (ages 5 to 9);
and "Honi and His Magic
Circle" by Phillis Ger-
shator, pictures by Shay
Rieger (ages 5 to 9).
In preparation is a
photo-essay depiction of an
