was reported by Donald M.
Robinson, JDC president.
There are about 400 Jews
in Egypt, 250 in Alexandria
and 150 in Cairo. In Leba-
non, where there are an es-
timated 400 Jews left, the
JDC shipped 1,058 pounds
of matzot and 204 bottles of
Passover _wine to enable
them to conduct a Seder
properly.
In all; the JDC shipped
428,322 pounds of matzot
and 30,468 bottles of
Passover wine. The JDC
also issued special grants to
several countries for the
purchase of Passover
supplies locally.
Romania received the
largest amount, 230,690
pounds of matzot, 33,300
pounds of matza meal,
220 pounds of shmura
matza and 30,000 bottles
of wine. Tunisia received
57,100 pounds of matza
and 3,307 pounds , of
matza flour. Poland re-
ceived 40,000 pounds of
matza and 6,300 pounds
of matza flour. Other
countries receiving
Passover supplies were:
Greece, Italy, Yugos-
lavia, Melilla and Cueta
in Spanish Morocco, Por-
tugal and Spain.
The 17,637 pounds of
matza and 264 bottles of
wine sent to Italy were
meant primarily for Soviet
Jewish transmigrants wait-
ing in Rome and nearby
communities for formalities
to be completed before pro-
ceeding to the U.S. and
other western countries.
In preparation for the
Sedorim the JDC west
through a dress rehearsal
with the children, setting
up the table in proper form
and explaining the meaning
and symbolism of the holi-
day. For the Soviet children,
all this was new to them.
Plans also are under way

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Joint Distribution
Committee is planning to
fly matzot made in France
to Egypt because a ship's
captain refused to take
Israeli-made matzot there.
The JDC reported that
the captain of the ship,
"Padami," unloaded the
matzot in Cyprus because
the cartons had Israeli
marking on them.
He said that he could not
take them to Alexandria be-
cause the stamp on the bill
of lading does not allow
merchandise from Israel to
be brought to Egypt.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —

by Zvi Wolf, the chairman of

immigration and develop-
ment.
Wolf added that the
number of new immigrants
registering as Histadrut
members also rose, by 25
percent during 1978.
