Jewish Calendar System Defined

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX
(Copyright 1979 JTA, Inc.)

The Bible numbers the
months from Nisan (which
is referred to as the first
month) when we observe
the Jewish NeW Year (Rosh
Hashana) in the fell.
The Jew actually has a
double identity. He is a citi-
zen of the world and thus
has common human respon-
sibilities. He is also a Jew

giving him additional re-
sponsibilities.
The New Ye-ar is observed
in the fall because that is
the anniversary of the Crea-
tion of . man (universal
man). The months are
counted from the spring be-
cause that is the Passover
month i.e. the anniversary
of the Exodus when the
Jewish people became a na-
tion.

Best Wishes for a happy,

healthy and joyous Passover

Dijon Jews Are
Targets of Bias

PARIS (JTA) — Anti-
Semitic inscriptions ap-
peared recently on Jewish-
owned shops and institu-
tions in Dijon. Police said
some 50 buildings were
daubed with such slogans as
"Jews out of France" and
"The SS have returned."
Members of the small
Jewish community in Dijon
said they had never had any
trouble with their
neighbors. The local district
governor ordered police to
organize special watches at
night to protect Jewish-
owned property in Dijon.
