The Swedish note also contained more direct and detailed evidence about Wallenberg, a University of Michigan graduate. Al- though it relates to an ear- lier period than Kaplan's stay at the Butyrka in 1975, it further -demolishes the Soviets' claim that Wallen- berg died in 1947. It came from Abraham Kalinski, who arrived in Israel in 1976. A former Polish offi- cer, he had been arrested in Moscow in 1944 and spent 15 years in Soviet prisons and camps. Kalinski's testimony says Wallenberg was interned in the Verchneuralsk Prison in the Vhelyabinsk region from the end of the 1940s until 1953; from 1953 to 1955, he was in Alexan- drovski Central Prison in the Irkutsk region; in 1955 he was transferred to the Vladimir Prison, where he stayed- until the 1960s "in cell 23, corpus two." Exactly three weeks la- ter, the Soviet Embassy handed the Swedish Foreign Ministry its reply containing only three para- graphs. It recalled the orig- inal statement about Wal- lenberg's death (issuqd 22 years ago by Andrei Gromyko, the present Soviet Foreign Minister) and added: "This conclusion was definitely confirmed by the findings of an exam- ination of the informa- tion supplied by the Swedish government in its request of Jan. 3, this year. The assertions that Raoul Wallenberg was in the Soviet Union as re- cently as 1975 are not in accordance with the facts." A world-wide campaign is taking issue with that statement, led by Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Lantos of Alexandria, Va. On March 18, the Swedish newspaper Dagen s Nyheter published a story claiming that the U.S. as- sisted Wallenberg's efforts to rescue Hungarian Jews - and that the U.S. offered to intervene with the Russians after the war but Sweden turned down the U.S. offer. According to Sven Strom- berg, a correspondent for Swedish Radio in London, former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger was asked in 1973 by Wallen- berg's mother to intervene in the case. Stromberg says Kissinger turned down the request because he was angered by Swedish criti- cism of the U.S. war in Vie- Urge Israel-Arab Health Projects JERUSALEM (JTA) — A call to Egyptians and other Arabs to cooperate with Is- rael in evolving regional health plans and projects has been issued by Prof. Kalman Mann, director- general of the Hadassah Medical Organization, on the Arabic-language sta- tion of Israel Radio. 44o ISO Got a Problem? •I DAVE'S 10 QUALITY TIUMMEHO SI 4 DISPOSERS DISH WASHERS WATER HEATERS TUBS • FAUCETS TOILETS 4.4 D677-23.14E ()PUN 6 DAN'S CLOSED SABBA rH BAD CHECKS!! The winning song was "Hal- lelujah," sung by 26-year- old Gali Atari, who was ac- companied by the Milk and Honey group. The Israeli song, with 125 points, beat out the Spanish entry with 111 points and the French which received 106. This means that Israel has the right to host next year's Eurovision contest. However, it is :not clear whether Israel will do so since this year's contest cost Israel Television about $1 million, a heavy drain on the station's tight budget. tnam.
