Friday, April 6 1979 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Conversion of Non-Jews Debated at Convention of Reform Rabbis PHOENIX, Ariz. — Con- version of non-Jews to Judaism was a major topic of discussion at the 90th convention of the Central Conference of American Rabbis which met in Phoenix last week. The rabbinical body dis- cussed the proposal by Why A Diamond? For many, the diamond is a symbol of eternal love and committment. For others, it will be the flawless gift to repeat special feelings again and again. Whenever you give, Widenbaum will help you with a stone whose fire and sparkle will shine with increasing value over the years. What a perfect way to express your feelings. e ib IT) Creotrve JeAelers 29 I 73 Northwestern Southfield/356-2525 Open Mon. thru Wed. 10 to 6. Thurs. & Fri. 10 to 8. Sat. 10 to 6 Rabbi Alexander Schindler that the Reform movement make a more aggressive at- tempt to welcome converts and to reach out to the "un- churched." Many of the rab- bis objected to the part of the Schindler proposal that suggests Jews actively pro- selytize. Another aspect of the conversion issue has been the appeal by many liberal Jews in Europe and Israel for stricter standards of conversion, including the requirements of circumci- sion for men and ritual im- mersion in water by all con- verts. On the issue of setting standards for converts, the rabbis heard sharply opposing views and made no move to approve a stricter code. The committee on conver- sions of the conference is- sued a statement that ad- vises the movement to "seek to improve the effectiveness of current conversion pro- grams" and urged the con- ference "to draw-up and ac- cept a set of minimal standards for dealing with a pedagogic, spiritual and psychological development of the converts." At the conference, Rabbi Jerome R. Malino of Dan- bury, Conn., was elected president of the CCAR. The Reform rabbis last week gathered in front of College Exchange Mister Charge & Visa are welcome. JERUSALEM (ZINS) — El Al Israel Airlines and the hotel industry have been blaming each other for a 12 percent drop in winter tourism. El Al says the hotel prices are too high (a $77 room at the Dan cost $22 in 1975) and the hotels say El Al and TWA waited too long to im- plement their lower rate schedules. Israeli economists say, however, that the blame lies with the Israeli Pound, which now stands at IL 20 to $1. The economists say the Pound should really be at IL 30 to $1.
