7—TIEWIEWISIFIEWS - Soldier's Death Leads to Haggadot Collection By MOSHE RON The Jewish News Special Israel Correspondent TEL AVIV --- Israel commemorates the Jewish communities in the world which were destroyed by the Nazis by naming Passover Haggadot after them. Now a special Haggada haS appeared. Thirty-one years' ago, on the Passover before the establishment of the state of Israel, a baby was born to a couple of new immigrants who had been interned for a year in the refugee camp in Cyprus. David and Esther Fogel ere born in Hungary. They met in Yugoslavia and mar- ried in the Cyprus camp. There were religious people. Their first child was born on Passover, so they named him Moshe. - Moshe Fogel was a very good pupil in school. He finished his studies at the Technion in Haifa and became a teacher. At the age of 26 he was killed in the Yom Kippur War. He left a pregnant wife. The baby was named after his father, Moshe, with the addition Avi-Hayal (the father of a soldier). The elder Fogels under- went a difficult crisis. They often visited the Wailing Wall in order to mourn their loss. Once they entered a book shop on Jaffa St. and found three beautiful Pesach Haggadot. They bought them in commem- oration of the day on which their son was killed. Moshe had liked to read Haggadot. He knew their contents by heart. He was a Yeshiva scholar and had the inclination to study prayers and historic religious songs. The -three Haggadot be- came the start of a collec- tion. The Fogels established a special commemoration shelf for religious books in their son's yeshiva. The pupils of this school started to collect special Haggadot and sent them to the Fogels.
