Reform Jewish congrega-
tions in the Detroit area will
pay tribute to Rabbi rsaac
Mayer Wise_the founder and
builder of Reform Judaism
in North America at a serv-
ice planned for 8:30 p.m.
April 13 at Temple Israel.
Temples Beth El,
Emanu-El, Kol Ami and
Beth Jacob will not hold
services that night so that
their combined member-
ships may participate in
this seventh annual Isaac
M. Wise Sabbath.
The service, under the
auspices of the Metropoli-
tan Detroit Federation of
Reform Synagogues, marks
the 160th anniversary of
the birth of Rabbi Wise.

organization is making
available shmura (guarded)
matza, special hand-baked
matza.

Rabbi Chaim M. Bergs-
tein, spiritual leader of
Cong. Bais Chabad of Far-
mington Hills, will distrib-
ute the matza. Rabbi Bergs-
tein also will conduct
Sedorim in his home for
residents of Farmington
Hills who do not hold their
own Seder.

It was in -1873 that Rabbi
Wise founded- the Union of
American Hebrew Congre-
gations. Two years later
Rabbi Wise organized in the
basement of his own temple
in Cincinnati the Hebrew
Union College-Jewish In-
stitute of Religion. The-final

creation of Rabbi Wise was
the formation of the Central
Conference of American
Rabbis.
