It is customary to place pieces of bread around the house before conducting the search for leaven on the night before Passover (Be- dikas Hametz). Two reasons are offered for this practice. One is that this serves to remind the searcher (usually the owner) to annul his owner- ship of any hametz. He might forget to do this if he saw no pieces of bread as- suming that his original cleaning of the house did away with all leavening. This is especially so be- cause the actual search for leavening takes place for a while before that night. By the time that night arrives the house is usually thoroughly cleaned. What remains is the last vestige of ceremony the annulment and the destruction of hametz. To remind him to do this pieces of hametz are laid out so as to have him concentrate on the necessary steps to finalize the removal of the hametz. Furthermore if a number of pieces were not laid out in re- spective places the searcher might possibly abandon the search be- fore it is actually com- plete. Some customs require that exactly 10 pieces be - laid out in this procedure. Some claim that the 10 pieces remind us of the 10 plagues that overtook the Egyptians in the course of the preparation for the Exodus. Others claim that they represent the 10 sons of Haman since the plot to ex- terminate the Jews was de- clared on the day before the Passover. It is also claimed that the 10 pieces represent the 10 temptations of the evil spirit which must be cleared away like the hametz. Bank Is Backing Employee Sports TEL AVIV — Bank Leumi Le-Israel is expand- ing a program which in- volves more than one-third of its 10,000-person staff in athletic activities.
