Womens Groups
Ou t of Touch'
NEW YORK — Jewish
women's volunteer organ-
• izations have failed to ad-
dress themselves seriously
to the changind needs of
contemporary Jewish
women and are out of touch
•
with the needs of their own
members, according to Dr.
r
Paula Hyman, assistant
professor of Jewish History
►.
at Columbia University.
The analysis by Dr.
yman appears in the
latest issue of LILITH, the
independent Jewish
women's magazine.
"This is a time of great
transition for women, a
time of stress as well as
opportunity (but) Jewish
women's organizations do
t-
not seem to have recognized
this," writes Hyman.
"They have little to say to
us about our quest for mean-
ingful roles for ourselves as
Jewish women or with our
rightful struggle for -posi-
tions of communal respon-
sibility. The organizations'
early feistiness has given
way to a comfortable ac-
ceptance of the status quo,"
said Hyman. She observed
that women still have as lit-
tle decision-making in
Jewish life now as they did
when the major volunteer
organizations were
founded.

Habonim Unit
Led by Non-Jew
•
*
NEW YORK •— The
president of the American
Habonim Association chap-
ter in Lakewood, N.J., for
the last four years has been
a Mexican-born non-Jew.
The Zionist group has
been led by Armond
Haucuja, whose daughter
joined Habonim 10 years
ago. The daughter is now
married and lives on a
kibutz in the Negev, accord-
ing to the Jewish Post and
Opinion.
The Haucuja family is
actively involved in
Habonim, they say, because
the group teaches positive
values and Jews need the
feel ing of confidence — after
the Holocaust -- that is pro-
vided by Israel.
Observers Doubt
Mideast Merger
•
JERUSALEM (ZINS)
Israeli observers believe
that the four months of
negotiations to bring about
a union of Syria and Iraq are
going well., but remain
skeptical that the two states
will successfully merge.
They cite four Arab mer-
gers since 1958 which have
failed: Egypt and Syria;
Syria, Egypt -and Iraq;
Syria, Egypt, Libya and Su-
dan; and Syria and Jordan.

Nine U.S. Senators Ask Iran for Assurances on Minorities
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Nine Seaators have asked
Iranian Prime Minister
Mehdi Bazargan for assur-
ances on the treatment of
Jews and other minorities
in Iran. In a letter to him,
the Senators said they "rec-
ognize and appreciate the
efforts your government has
made here in Washington"
to meet with representa-
tives of the American
Jewish community "to dis-
cuss the future of that reli-
gious minority in Iran."
The Senators said that
while statements by Ayatol-
lah Khomeini before he re-
turned to Iran from his exile
in France provide "us with a
most important source of
assurance on this matter,"
the Senators sought reaf-
firmation of that position.
"The communities of
Bahais, Zoroastrians, Jews
and Christians appear par-
ticularly vulnerable to mis-
treatment by some groups
claiming to act with the
authority of your govern-
ment," the Senators stated.
"We remain aware of,
and must communicate
to you, the concerns ex-

pressed to us about the
potential for harassment
of these religious groups"
and the concern here
over how the Iranian up-
heaval would affect
members of religious
minorities in Iran.
Sen. Donald Stewart (D-
Ala.) originated the letter
which was signed by Sena-
