Organization's New Haggada Blends Modern, Traditional

Commentaries,
ex-
planatory notes guiding
the reader in preparation,
and then the conducting of
the Seder and supplemen-
tary readings mark the new
Passover Haggada issued
by the Rabbinical Assem-
bly.
This Haggada first ap-
peared as a special edition of
Conservative Judaism, the
organ of the Jewish
Theological Seminary of
America.
Edited by Rabbi Michael
Strassfeld, the Haggada is
enriched with the addi-
tional readings which link
the modern with the tradi-
tional. It is to appear as a
special illustrated volume
with whatever other edito-
rial changes may be made.
The Haggada is now
being studied for its use
by Conservative leaders
and lay people who will
have an opportunity to
apply it at Sedorim this
year.
The editor points to the
following as significant

allover to

Ali

An original art rendering by the Israeli-French artist, Nissan Engel, depicts the
Morranos observing Passover in secret during the Spanish Inquisition. This also
serves as a reinnder of the oppression of three million Soviet Jews during the

coming Passover season.

songs were added.
"There are a number of
minor changes in wording,
often to_ clarify an obscure
comment.
"We have added an his-
torical section to make
explicit the theme that in
each and every generation
we experience both persecu-
tion and redemption. This
section follows the meal and
begins anew the tale of the
evening. Included in this
section is material about
the Holocaust and the state
of Israel."
"The most basic
change that we have
made involves the Arami
Oved Avi section. Pas-
sages in this section are
often obscure; what was
clear to their authors has

become obfuscated by
the passage of centuries."
The importance of the
supplementary readings
and the marginal notes be-
comes apparent in several
parts of the text. The expose
of the blood libel, which was
used against Jews at
Passover time, is an exam-
ple. The reference to the
Warsaw Ghetto Uprising,
which also was at Passover
time, is indicative of r

lations as additions to this
Haggada.
While it is now one of
some 3,000 texts known to
have been published, this
new Haggada of the Con-
servative Jewish movement
attains considerable impor-
tance.

Modern Haggada texts
have been enriched with
readings and supplemen-
tary historical material
based on experiences of re-
cent years.
In recent years, the most
impressive Haggadot in-
cluded the Passover Hag-
gada edited by Dr. Nahum
Glatzer.
Researched material
dealing with traditions of
the Passover and the rab-
binic discussions, with ex-
cerpts from the studies-con-
ducted by E.D. Goldschmidt
enhance the Glatzer-edited
text.
It has been re-issued, in a
two-color printing, with
illustrations from the
Prague Haggada as a
Schocken paperback.
The Holocaust readings
include Anne Frank's "If
God Lets Me Live." There is
a guide to names and terms
appearing in the Haggada
and the reminiscences of re-
sistance to Nazism add a
valuable factor to Passover
observance for readers of
special selections included
in this especially impres-
sive Haggada.

We wish you a
Happy and Healthy Passover

There will be peace in Israel —
And Israel will live
And Israel will grow strong.
And Israel will grow rich —
And the neighbors to the North
And the neighbors to the South
And the neighbors to the East,
All her neighbors will say:
"Behold! In Israel there is justice,
In Israel there isfreedom,
In Israel there is law.
Behold! In Israel the strong does not ride
Upon the neck of the weak
And he who labors is honored
And he who idles is scorned.
Behold! In Israel woman is the peer of man
And a child is prince of the blood;
In Israel the ages are loved and tended
And the sick are housed and healed.
Behold! In Israel there are molders of beauty
And delvers and seekers of truth,
And learning, like a mountain stream,
Flows on, limpid and cool and endless,
And all mouths drink.
Behold! In Israel there is light,
In Israel there is hope,
In Israel man is master of his fate!"
And the neighbors to the North
And the neighbors to the South
And the neighbors to the East,
All her neighbors will say:
"Let us rid our lands of the tyrants,
Let us crash the chains of ignorance,
Let us sever the bands which blind us,
Let us be like unto Israel!
Let us have freedom. and justice and law,
Let us have art and science and learning,
Let our women be the equal of men
And our children be precious as princes;
Let us be like unto Israel!
Let Israel be our beacon,
Let Israel be our guide,
Let Israel be our friend, our brother!"
