DR. JULIAN PRIVER
the health care needs of the
general community."
Dr. Priver became Sinai's
chief executive officer even
before the hospital formally
opened in 1953; and he
guided this institution
through several expansion
stages, from a 210-bed
community hospital into a
625-bed community com-
plex with extensive services
and facilities.
His pioneering efforts
have led Sinai into
numerous projects, many
of which have been con-
sidered "firsts" in Michi-
gan. Among the projects
credited to Dr. Priver's
efforts are a comprehen-
sive research center, a
cleft palate clinic, a low
vision clinic, a commu-
nity mental health pro-
gram, and a center for
continued care for
patients not yet ready to
return home for con-
valescence. -
Numerous other contri-
butions involved the de-
velopment of Sinai Hosptial
as an important teaching
institution, the establish-
ment of the Shapero School
of Nursing, and Sinai Hos-
pital's participation in the
Metropolitan Northwest
Detroit Hospital Corp. in
which four neighboring
hospitals formed an alliance
with the major goal of shar-
ing services.
Dr. Priver also instituted
the hospital's "preoperative
holding area," a relatively
new concept in patient care
which won the Gerald B.
Lambert award for innova-
tive health care practices.
Last year, Dr. Priver's ef-
forts earned another cita-
tion for Sinai Hospital for
having the best cost con-
tainment program among
all hospitals in Michigan.
