Best Prices In Town Call Albert Ross Mark Beltaire, popular Detroit Free Press colum- nist, who has been honored by ,the Jewish National Fund Council of Detroit in appreciation for his interest in tree planting and affores- tation in Israel, devoted his March 21 column to the JNF. He expressed his interest in Israel and the JNF program, as follows: "I grew up in our town on a street made memorable by trees, a cathedral of elms. For most of my life I've been where trees are, and have mourned when that miser- able beetle sneaked in from the Netherlands - and de- stroyed them. "That is much of the rea- son why I was especially moved when the Jewish Na- tional Fund of Greater De- troit recently honored me with the planting of a grove of 1,000 trees in my name in Israel. "Philip Slomovitz, editor and publisher of the Jewish News, and his son Carmi, now president of the fund, made the pre- sentation. And I'm fully aware that Percy Kaplan of the fund and old friend Paul Masserman had a hand in it. "I've been intrigued with the idea of Trees for Israel ever since I first heard MARK BELTAIRE about the project in 1955 .. . I've followed its progress ever since, have watched it grow to a spreading 135 mil- lion trees in 1978 plus a total of 160,000 acres re- claimed from the stoniest, most arid kind of desert where even the vestiges of roots were long ago up- rooted by goats. If the world hasn't blown itself apart, a debacle that would not be the fault of the trees." "This planting of trees in land not previously given to trees is known as afforesta- tion, as distinguished from reforestation, defined as 'to renew forest cover by natural seedings or artifi- cial planting.' Afforestation is manifestly more difficult and even more rewarding in that it virtually creates something out of nothing. "I applaud the concept, wish it could be extended to many other parts of the world where any kind of greenery would lift the economy and the human spirit. "There is nothing polit- ical about a tree. It offers shade and beauty, can be converted into timber and fuel as it grows, is re- placeable when once es- tablished, and creates badly needed new soil without giving a fig for the creeds or nationality f; the people it serves.
