The company was founded in 1886 by Isaac Oscherwitz. Oscherwitz emigrated from Germany where he was • a sausage maker. As settlers the Oscherwitzes moved down the Ohio River and stopped off at Cincin- nati to provide for their trek to the west. A great favorite among the early settlers was Oscherwitz kosher sausages. The fame of his products spread throughout the Midwest. In 1925, the Oscherwitz family opened another kosher meat packing plant in Chicago which packed products under the Best's Kosher label. About 30 years later, the two com- panies were merged and combined their production and headquarters in Chicago. Today, they continue to produce kosher beef prod- ucts under both labels — SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco Mineral Water has been determined by a San Francisco Orthodox rabbi to be kosher, The source of San Fran- cisco Mineral Water is the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir which taps the water of the Tuolumne River in North- ern California.
