Open just about six
weeks, Spiro's is follow-
ing in the old Biffs tradi-
tion of a good ham-
burger, small salad ...
and perhaps a bowl of
soup.
Spiro's is one of the very
few places other than deli-
catessens that use Jewish
halla bread for its French
toast . . . The Coney Island
hot dogs are like those on
Lafayette downtown, with
the onions cut fresh daily
. . . Spiro's chili sauce is
made by one Ja-f the
Lafayette Ave. Coney Is-
land spots.
The only thing frozen at
Spiro's are the French fries.
Steve used to bowl in an
Oak Park open bowling
league and carried a 207
season average . . . Quite
far cry from the day in 1945
when his entire family es-
caped from behind the Iron
Curtain . . . leaving their
farm and everything behind
in Albania . . . and settling
in Greece.
As a restaurant man he is
now considered among the
best . . . and with Mike,
Spiro's should be the win-
ning combination that
locale has needed for so
long.
MAX SHELBY has been
back about a month as head
chef at Perfect Blend in the
Heritage Bldg., Northwest-
ern and Evergreen . . . The
kitchen is only open for
lunch until 3 p.m. and Max's
abilities back there are
among the finest.
New owners of the Perfect
Blend are Ted Fitzgerald
and John Klukaby.
AL WERTHMAN is now
sole owner of the Old Mill
Tavern in Waterford . . .
formerly a John Laffrey
property . . . Kim Sloan is
still its fine manager.
CHARLEY'S CRAB,
adjacent to the Northfield
Hilton, is the only restau-
rant in Michigan given the
1978 Epicurean Award by
Carte Blanche . . . Only 30
awards were given nation-•
ally last year by Carte
Blanche . . . for excellence
in dining, quality food, good
service and pleasant atmos-
phere.
Chuck Muer's popular
seafood restaurant carries
on the name and tradition of
his original Charley's Crab
in Orchard Lake, destroyed
by fire on Feb. 22, 1975.
EVELYN TOBIAS be-
comes the first person to
have a Bar-Le-Duc sand-
wich (cream cheese and
jelly) at Sol's Deli in Lat-
