REP. WILLIAM BRODHEAD
In a statement to The De-
troit Jewish News, after
attending the peacemaking
ceremony on Monday, Con-
gressman Brodhead stated:
"These are very happy
and encouraging develop-
ments. As we celebrate the
successful culmination of
the long struggle thus far,
however, We must keep in
mind that there is still
much work that remains to
be done. The proposed
treaty will not enforce itself.
It will require continued ef-
fort and understanding on
both sides if it is to work.
Nor will this treaty end the
tensions which exist in the
Middle East. The
Egyptian-Israeli initiative
Youth Focus
of AJCongress
Tour Program
The American Jewish
Congress recently enlarged
its 20-year-old tour pro-
gram to Israel by adding
special tours for young
people under 40 called
"Accent-On-Youth."
According to American
Jewish Congress Michigan
Regional Director Ruth S.
Rosenbaum, the second
America-Israel singles con-
vention and the first couples
convention will be held in
summer. In addition, spe-
cial 15-day and 20-day tours
geared to the interests of the
under 40 traveler will be of-
fered.
This year's couples
convention will have as
its theme "Changing
Forms of Jewish Life."
Israeli couples of the
same age group will be
co-discussants, co-
participants and will co-
host some of the social
events. Special events are
planned throughout the
tour.
The new American
Jewish Congress "Accent-
On-Youth" brochure is now
available, as well as the new
1979 brochure describing
the entire AJCongress
travel program, which has
in addition to the youth pro-
gram, special trips for all
age groups, including Bar
and Bat Mitzva celebrants.
For a brochure or informa-
tion, call the AJCongress,
357-2766.
is really a starting point
which must be expanded
upon in the quest for a com-
prehensive Middle East
peace settlement.
"I believe that the need
for strong U.S. support of
Israel is greater than
ever. The decision of
moderate Arab states
like Saudi Arabia and
Jordan not to support the
Israeli-Egyptian treaty
underscores the lack of
consensus among Arab
nations on how to deal
with the reality of a stable
and strong Israel.
"The situation in Iran and
Lebanon points to the vol-
atile potential in the Middle
East. In addition to this na-
tion's longtime commit-
ment to Israel, the United
States has a deep and abid-
ing interest in lessening
tensions in the Middle -East.
As the oldest stable democ-
racy in the region, Israel
has an important stabiliz-
ing function which is be-
coming increasingly ap-
preciated and understood by
U.S. policymakers.
"I will continue to insist
upon strong U.S. support of
our longtime friend and
ally, and I believe that this
is the prevailing sentiment
in the Congress."
NEW YORK — El Al Is-
rael Airlines will inaugu-
rate Tuesday the first direct
route from Florida to Israel
with the opening of weekly
Boeing 747 service from
Miami to Tel Aviv.
El Al will also commence
bi-weekly 747 operations
from Chicago to Tel Aviv,
effective Monday. These
new routes will mark El Al's
first scheduled flights from
United States cities other
than New York, from which
there are presently 15 de-
partures weekly to Tel
Aviv.
Trans World Airlines
currently operates through
flights to Israel from nine
U.S. cities in addition to
New York.
Another innovation is
the inauguration of two
series of low-cost charter
flights from New York to
Tel Aviv. World Airways
Douglas DC10 wide-body
aircraft will operate
round trip on a weekly
basis on behalf of New
York's Tower Travel
Corp. Council for Educa-
tional Exchange will
start operations May 20
from New York using El
Al Boeing 707 equipment.
A Second weekly CIEE
flight series commences
June 25 using Trans Inter-
national Airlines DC8 jets.
AJCongress Sets Travel Meeting
Betty Alderson, the
creator and international
director of the American
Jewish Congress Overseas
Program, will address the
spring travel meeting of the
AJCongress 8 p.m. Tuesday
at Cong. Beth Abraham
Hillel Moses.
Mrs. Alderson will de-
scribe the new itiner-
aries the AJCongress has
planned for those con-
sidering travel to Israel or
the many other places of
Jewish interest that the
AJCongress program in-
cludes — Europe, the
Orient, Morocco, Egypt.
For brochure or informa-
tion, call the AJCongress
office, 357-2766.
El Al Airline Celebrates 30th
on Israel Independence Day
El Al Israel Airlines will
mark its 30th anniversary
on Israel's independence
day this year, and a week-
long celebration has been
planned by the Michigan
office for April 27-May 4.
According to Ami Spek-
tor, Michigan district direc-
tor, the celebration will in-
clude an exhibit at the Is-
rael Expo, April 28 and 29
at the main Jewish Corn-
munity Center. There also
will be a poster contest for
children on the theme "El
Al — Our Airline."
New posters from the air-
line are available for distri-
bution to area organiza-
tions. For posters and in-
formation on the El Al an-
niversary activities locally,

The local Knights Templar organization made its
third annual pilgrimage to Israel, with the aid of El Al
Israel Airlines. The group is one of the many organiza-
tions planning trips to Israel, under the auspices of
the Michigan District offic3, headed by Ami Spektor.
One group, Roses, Inc., took 77 persons to Israel to
learn about that country's rose-growing techniques.
Trips are being scheduled for the Shriners,
psychoanalysts, gerontologists, Alpha Omega Dental
Fraternity, physicians, alumni groups and students.
According to Spektor, 1978 was the biggest year for
tourism to Israel from Michigan.
