"Anyone who thought that Alice was going to be mellower is totally wrong. Alice is crazier than ever. Only now the craziness is coming from within and not from a bottle. It's so great. I'm really having fun on stage. And now it's better because I really know what's going on. I'm not per- forming in a drunken stupor." Nice going, Coop. Let's hope things stay this way! OUT IN L.A. for the Grammy Awards, I enjoyed spending some time with A & M recording artist Gino Vannelli. He was busy re- hearsing for his upcoming tour, but was nice enough to break for awhile to talk about what's been going on since he was last in Detroit (over a year ago). The main news, of course, is the fact that he was nominated for a Grammy for his perform- ance of "I Just Wanna Stop" on the "Brother To Brother" album. "It came as a complete surprise," said the hand- some Canadian singer. "I never expected it. I'm proud of it, though." Unfortunately, there can only be one winner and Barry Manilow won for his performance of "Copacabana." After the awards show was over, Manilow was standing backstage with his assis- tant, Paul Brownstein. Both were ecstatic about the Grammy. Barry was beam- ing from ear to ear. "I'm thrilled," smiled Barry. "I remember you thought I'd get one a few years ago and you even wrote it in your column. But as the old saying goes, 'Better late than never.' " I was also so happy that Billy Joel won for "Just the Way You Are." It was so ob- viously the perfect choice for "Song of the Year." And winning "Record of the Year" as well was like frost- ing on the cake. Billy opened for the Beach Boys at Pine Knob a few years ago and he's one of the sweetest guys in the busi- ness. TALK ABOUT NICE GUYS (in any business), Sean Connery definitely be- longs iri that category. Had a chance to talk to the origi- nal James Bond down in New Orleans recently. He's a total gentleman, and still quite suave and charming. It's hard to believe that 007 is, in real life, fast approach- ing 50. Nevertheless, he is currently negotiating to do another James Bond film. This time for an astronomically-large fig- ure. "Well, the legalities are not all ironed out yet," he explained," but it's looking better all the time. I think I'll try my hand at writing this time, too. I plan to co- write the screenplay." Some have expressed doubt as to whether he can still pull off the role con- vincingly. After seeing him in "The Great Train Rob- bery," I'd say that old Sean still has some good years left in him (to say the very least!). IT'S NO SURPRISE to his old fans that Rod Stewart is now becoming THE rock star of the day. Everyone has his (or her) day in the sun and Rod is certainly basking in it these days. After having the number one album in the country, "Blondes Have More Fun" and the number one single in the country, "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?" Rod is about to embark on a major 10-week tour that will stop here in Detroit for three days in May. You can be sure that this is one ticket that will be precious and hard to come by. Rod seems to appeal to all ages and when he starts asking, "Do ya think I'm sexy?" the females in the audience sigh a collective "Yes." CAN'T WAIT FOR the new season at Pine Knob to start already. Besides want- ing to see some of my old favorites like Paul Anka and Englebert, I'm excited about seeing Donna Sum- mer, Chuck Mangione and Johnny Carson. (And talk about desirable tickets — seats for Johnny's shows will probably be the hottest sellers of the season.) The season isn't definite yet, so there are still plenty of surprise announcements coming up. But we can count on 1979 being a record-breaking year again. ARMDI Will Honor Begin NEW YORK Menahem Begin, prime minister of Israel has been selected to receive the 1979 Humanitarian Award of American Red Magen David for Israel.
