Jewish Leader Lauds, Blasts Begin a-n d= Carter-in SZ Talk
•
By HEIDI P4ESS
President Carter and Is-
rael Prime Minister
Menahem , Begin earned
praise for their roles in the
recent peace negotiations
from Theodore Mann,
president of-the _Conference
of Presidents of American
Jewish Organizations, who
addressed the community
Sunday at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek.
Speaking on behalf of the
synagogue's cultural com-
mission, Mann said
President Carter "is
entitled to our thanks" for
keeping his promise of mak-
ing peace in the Middle East
a major aim of his foreign
policy agenda.
"Carter brought extraor-
dinary persistence to bring-
ing peace in the Middle
East. He brought a willing-
ness to learn the smallest
details of the differences be-
tween Egypt and Israel,"
Mann said.
"Stubbornness is
probably the most out-
standing characteristic
of the man."
Mann also applied the
same characteristic to Be-
gin, but said that he is "a
tough negotiator willing to
make prudent sacrifices."
Mann lauded Begin for
his role as a "fiduciary —
trusyee of the safety of the
Jewish people — not only in
Israel but throughout the
world."
The Jewish leader also
was critical of Carter and
Begin, saying that the two
had made mistakes in their
pursuit of peace. • He
criticized Carter for invit-
ing the Soviet Union into
the peace process, causing
Egyptian President Anwar
Sadat to take matters into
his own hands by making
his . historic trip to
Jerusalem in 1977.
He criticized the Israeli
leader for establishing
new settlements in the
disputed areas in
January 1978.
The Jewish leader said
that "Israel is an important
friend" to the U.S., and
since the turmoil in Iran,
"Israel is looked upon as an
important strategic interest
in the Middle East for the
protection of U.S. interests
there."
Asked during a question
and answer period why he
didn't discuss Sadat's role
during his talk, Mann said
that "Sadat had the biggest
role of all. He took the in-

If Alcott has any fault as a
player, it's her friendliness
towards spectators. After

Alcott stayed on the rim of
