Israel is a unique destina-
tion with timeless tradi-
tions and modern sophisti-
cated cities — a land of deep
contrasts from the northern
hills and Crusader castles to
the deserts and resorts of
the south.
There is so much to see
and enjoy. Relax on Israel's

scuba dive and water ski,
and of course, visit Israel —
the Holy Land, with its in-
spiring and fascinating his-
torical and religious sights.
Israel is also an impor-
tant place for . groups, not
only for vacation and sight-
seeing, but also for profes-
sional study tours, congres-
ses and conventions.
We believe that the- fol-
lowing interesting facts and
highlights will be most
enlightening and helpful.
On May 14, 1948, the
state of Israel was pro-
claimed. It is a republic,
headed by a president,
elected by the 120-member
Knesset (parliament), and a
prime minister. Elections to
the Knesset are held every
four years on a system of
proportional representa
tion. Every citizen over the
age of 18, regardless of race
or religion, is entitled to
vote in secret balloting for
the Knesset and local gov-
ernment bodies.
RELIGIONS: All de:
nominations are free to
worship in their own ways,
maintain their religious
and charitable institutions
and administer their inter-
nal affairs. The inviolabil-
ity of holy places and cen-
ters of worship of all faiths
is guaranteed by law. Each
religious body has the
statutory right to observe
its own weekly rest-day and
holy days. The Jewish Sab-
bath and festivals are offi-
cial holidays of Israel.

THE HOLY LAND:

Apart from being the
Jewish state, Israel is also
the Holy Land for Chris-
tianity, and possesses one of
the three holy cities of Is-
lam: Jerusalem. Many
Americans traveling to Is-
rael are Christian pilgrims
visiting the holy places of
Bethlehem, Hebron,
Jericho, Nazareth, Cana,
Capernaum and the Sea of
Galilee.
CLIMATE: Israel's cli-
mate may be compared to
that of Florida and South-
ern California. The sum-
mer, which lasts from April
to October, is warm and vir-
tually rainless. During this
season, the most pleasant
vacation areas are the sea-
side resorts and hilly towns

of Jerusalem and afed,
where the weather is drier
and cooler.
The winter season, from
November to March, is
characterized by cooler
temperatures and short
spells of rain interspersed
with long periods of sun-
shine. At this time of year,
Tiberias, on the Sea of
Galilee, Sodom, on the Dead
Sea, Eilat and Sinai on the
Red Sea, have ideal winter
weather.

CONVENTIONS AND
SEMINARS: Israel is a

major venue for interna-
tional conventions, sym-
posia and trade fairs with
,many scheduled events
each year. The largest con-
vention facility is the
Binyanei Haooma Conven-
tion Center in Jerusalem
which seats 3,500 people
and the major hotels have
facilities for large as-
semblies and committees.
Israel has also become a
popular destination for cor-
porations offering incentive
trips to teachers and sales-
men. Most incentive tours
are organized for the winter
when Israel's climate at
that time is pleasant and
mild.
