Morris Goldsmith, retired
owner of the New York
Bagel Baking Co., died
March 12 at age 74.
Born in Poland, Mr.
Goldsmith lived 58 years in
Detroit. He bought the com-
pany in 1923 and retired six
years ago.
Mr. Goldsmith expanded
his business to five stores in
Southfield, Detroit,
Ferndale, Oak Park and
Trenton, and produced
nearly 500,000 bagels per
week.
Mr. Goldsmith was a
olesale baker for the first
28 years the company was
in business and opened his
first retail store in 1951.
He was a member of
Mosaic Lodge of the Ma-
sons.
Mr. Goldsmith leaves his
wife, Anna; -three sons, Dr.
Thomas, Harvey and Her-
man; a brother, Sam; two
sisters, Mrs. Sam (Minnie)
Goldstone and Mrs. -Martin
(Ceil) Shubin; and eight
grandchildren.
Irwin Ratner, 79
Irwin Ratner, a retired
jeweler, died March 12 at
age 79.
Born in Russia, Mr.
Ratner lived 69 years-in the
U.S. and 53 years in Detroit.
He operated a jewelry busi-
ness in the Metropolitan
Building in downtown De-
troit for 50 years until his
retirement in 1973.
He was amember of
Cong. Bnai David for 40
years and was active in the
men's club. He served two
terms as men's club
president.
He was scoutmaster of
Boy Scout Troop 135 and
held the Silver Beaver
Award. He resided at 22031
Beverly, Oak Park.
He is survived by his wife,
Cornelia; a daughter, Mrs.
Tommy Salmons; four
grandchildren and two .
great-grandchildren.
