Guest Columnists

Why is it, whenever
Danny Raskin decides to get
a tan that Conway and
Satchwell end up both im-
mersed to their hipS in snow
and writing an article for
our bronze skinned buddy?
The article is always a
pleasure. The snow is not —
and therein lies a tale, dear
readers, about restaurants!
So what else is new?
On a recent, fairly decent
late winter day (for Detroit),
the white-haired member of
the Conway-Satchwell
team took off for Cleveland,
Ohio; a short trip to pub-
licize our new Toronto
Guide. That short trip
turned into a long involun-
tary stay, marooned in fact,
in not-so-beautiful, snow-
bound Sandusky, Ohio. A
winter resort it ain't — and
Satchwell was staying on
the right side of the tracks.
But it is only about 50 miles
from metropolitan Cleve-
land' — and it should have
some decent restaurants,
what with Cedar Point in
the summer and its prox-
imity to Cleveland! Right?
— Wrong!
Apart from being sur-
rounded at mealtime by
what appeared to be the
Fernwood, Ohio, Chamber
of _ Commerce (all with
inverted-bowl Prince
Valiant-type haircuts) plus
a 300-pound truck driver in
a shocking pink T-shirt
(complete with cherry-red
bands at the armpits), the
high point had to be the food
and drink. For example, a
pre-dinner "Screwdriver"
made with Tang, or a gray
steak that had apparently
been marinated in Lake
Erie, or a baked potato that
must have been left over
from Commodore Perry's
last visit, circa 1812. All
this in the best place in
town. The BoonieS, the
Boonies!
Why hadn't the maroon-
ing taken place in Michi-
gan, where you can go 50 (or

more) miles from Detroit
and feast to your heart's
content? We've claimed for
years that southeastern
Michigan is the No. 1 eating
area in the country. It is,
and one of the reasons is
that you can get excellent
food even in the Boonies, in
fact, all over the Boonies,
not in just one or two iso-
lated spots.
So here we are with a tour
of Detroit's Boonies — some
a good distance away; a few
pretty close to your back
yard.
Let's set sail for
Washtenaw County and
Maude's in Ann Arbor
(662-8485) where the ribs
and Amoretto Mousse de-
serve first place, as does just
about everything in this sw-
inging emporium from the
cut crystal glasses to the
young, exuberant help to (if
you're up to it) the Martini
Salad which is a pitcher of
martinis with a side dish of
broccoli, carrots, artichoke
hearts, et al for dipping.
The soups, changing daily
(over. 30 in all), are
homemade and a specialty
'Of the house. On the back of
the innovative menu it is
written and we quote:
"Maude's is so enjoyable, so
satisfying, so elegantly
decorated, that I've been
. tempted to stay there all
night." Perhaps, dear
reader, you - will be, too.
Should the delights of In-
dian cuisine beckon, head
for the Raja Rani, also in
Ann Arbor -(995-1545). Ev-
erything is completely au-
thentic — the food, waitres-
-ses in saris, 'Indian music
and a, serene atmosphere.
You'll be treated like kings
and queens but on a modest
budget. The Vegetarian
Special (dinner for two) is
only $10. There are many
chicken- and meat dishes in
the $5 to $6 range. No liquor
is served but you can order
fresh squeezed lemonade,
aromatically-spiced iced tea
or a cool, refreshing yogurt
drink. Natural food ingre-
dients are used and, in all
dishes, spices are added to
your taste in four degrees of
•"hotness" ranging from
"mild" to a laser beam "In-
dian Hot."
The tiny village of Man-
chester (population 1,600) is
our next destination where
the Black Sheep Tavern
(428-7000) has been a con-
sistent winner and a reli-
able standby in town since
1913. It's still going strong
with fine food, rustic,
attractively-decorated up-
stairs and downstairs din-
ing areas, excellent service,
full bar and a list of more
than 70 beers from no less
than 23 different countries.
Friday and Saturday nights
feature a buffet followed by
a sing-a-long downstairs.
Of special interest is the
newly re-opened Black
Sheep Repertory Theatre
right across the street;
dinner-theatre packages
are available with a dis-
count for groups of 10 or
more on any Wednesday,
