seems All-American, and it
is. But the expertise in-
voled in the sauces and the
overall preparation and
presentation elevates the
simplest dish to haute-
cuisine. Plus, Thursday
through Saturday evenings
there's music: a pianist, or
vocal groups singing old
sailing songs or Irish tunes.
It's all tradition and charm.
The Highland House, in
Highland (887-4161) pro-
vides spectacular Greek
salads, hearty pastas (in-
cluding a special rigatoni
with buttered garlic sauce,
green peppers and mush-
rooms) and meaty-lean
bar-b-q ribs, special shish-
ke-babs and topnotch pizzas
— portions are gigantic. It's
rustic, informal and com-
fortable — and you can take
out anything on the menu.
John Laffrey's Grand
Fenton Steak Parlour in
Fenton (629-2632) holds
forth in that town's 120
(plus)-year-old hotel. John's
given it a new face-lift and
included two dining areas,
both with railroad themes.
You'll find the same excel-
lent steaks, chops and chic-
ken divan that made John's
reputation at his Seven
Mile spot and at the Old
Mill, plus a very good bar
and "kind-to-your-wallet"
sandwiches.
In Livingston County, the
Canopy, in Brighton (229-
6013/7957) is a long-
standing favorite (a mile or
so south. . of 1-96) for those-
who want comfort, friendly
service and a bit of music on
Sunday or in the evenings.
The menu is extensive with
enough fish and meat
entrees to please even the
kids.- Try the sizable
chateaubriand, flambeed
oysters Rockefeller or lobs-
ter newburg — or just plain
_roast beef, strip steak, pan-
fried lake perch or broiled
fish — or spaghetti or
ravioli. Make sure you ask
for the "Fun" menu.
In Macomb County, in
beautiful downtown Utica
(about 20 Mile Rd.), you'll
find Bernardi's Olde
Town Cafe (739-2090).
Here the Bernardi family
(including father and son
who by day are top chefs for
GM and Ford) serve u

home cooking that's better
than home cooking. It's
small, well decorated and
beautifully lighted. The
french fries, jumbo burgers,
huge combination sand-
wiches and steak specials
are all excellent and very
reasonably priced. A very
friendly, relaxing place.

How about downriver in
Wayne County? Ciungan's
Shrimp House, in Ecorse
(386-1700) provides its cus-
tomers with a nautical de-
cor, their famous French
fried shrimp, broiled or pan
fried lake fish, finnan had-
die, 'shrimp in several other
guises, and extra thick
chops -- plus many other
meat and shellfish favo-
rites. Dinners come with all
the "fixings" and are rea-
sonably priced at this casual
place.

Farther to the south
you'll find Sibley Gardens
serving up steaks, chops,
seafood and a fair number of
Italian specialties at rea-
sonable priee-s- and in a
Tiffany-electric atmosphere
that serves as an oasis for
the neighboring iron and
steel crowd. • Joey's
Stables, a bit to the north at
the southern edge of Detroit
(843-3636) offers music,
dancing, a richly carved
"Gay 90's" bar and a spic-
and-span, highly-polished
barn-like interior for din-
ing. Their chicken paprikas
with dumplings is the house
specialty — and you can't go
wrong with the 'steaks,
chops, seafood or chicken a
la king. The prices are right
and there are special chil-
dren's dinners and omelet-
tes or sandwiches for the
light appetite.
Back south again, in
Wyandotte, you'll find the
Wabeek Dining Room
(282-9440). It's the type of
place your grandparents
. might have taken you to for
a treat after a Sunday drive.
Not fancy, no liquor; just
plain, good, old fashioned
American dishes at very-
very reasonable prices.
You'll also find the best
whole-strawberry pie in the
_ id*est.
M
And now, for a little sur-
prise, may we suggest you
try two places in Detroit
that are in areas that many
consider the Boonies. First,
the Traffic Jam and Snug,
Inc. (831-9470) in the
Wayne State area. There's
no sign, _it's very relaxed,
has good parking and a good
bar. Plain brick walls and
floors, antique photos and
artifacts and a crowd rang-
ing from Fisher Theater
stars, through students to
sedate ladies from the sub-
urbs. Natural foods, superb
baked goods and excellent
salads_ dominate an eclectic,
extremely inexpensive
menu that also includes one
of the best ice cream sodas
in town.

And last, one of our favo-
rites for an old-time, let-it-
all-hang-out, sing-along
night, we'd suggest the
Dakota Inn Rathskeller
on John R, just north of

McNichols (867-9722). The
area isn't what it used to be
but the Dakota is. And what
it is — Wurst, Sauerkraut,
Kessler Rippchen, Wiener
Schnitzel and Sauerbraten
— plus Wednesday through
Sunday evenings, more
"join in the fun"_ old-time
music than you've ever ex-
perienced. Not chic, not
"in," but a great deal of un-
complicated fun.
