By TRUDE FELDMAN
WASHINGTON — "To-
night we'll talk; tomorrow
night we'll sing . . ." This is
what Israeli Prime Minister
Menahem Begin said in the
Ova! Office after he arrived
in Washington for confer-
ences with President
Jimmy Carter on March 1.
He was announcing that
the President had accepted
his invitation for a tradi-
tional Friday night meal.
And sing they did! Seated
between Rosalynn and
Jimmy Carter, and opposite
U.S. Ambassador to Israel
Samuel. Lewis and Israeli
Ambassador to the U.S. Ep-
hraim Evron, Premier
Begin and his 35 guests
sang "Zemirot" (Sabbath
songs) after kidush and be-
fore each course of the meal.
The festive dinner took
place at Blair House, the
presidential guest home
across from the White
House, where the Begins
and their aides were
housed.
Premier Begin said the
kidush and the blessing
over the halls. He trans-
lated the blessings into
English and poured the
wine and distributed
pieces of halla to those

near him. When he ex-
pressed the hope that it
could symbolize good
luck, President Carter —
who wore a white yar-
mulke — quipped, "Then,
maybe I should haye a
bigger piece ..."
Prof. Yehuda Blum, Is-
raeli ambassador to the
United Nations, led the
Birkat Hamazon in He-
brew.
Among the guests were
former United Nations Am-
bassador Arthur Goldberg
and his wife, Dorothy.
Goldberg, wearing a large,
black yarmulke (a cap from
his Supreme Court days), of-
fered a prayer. He invoked
God's blessing on Begin and
Carter, saying, "We need
God's help in the great ven-
ture on which you are
engaged."
Goldberg also asked
guests to join together in the
"unity which can only char-
acterize relations between
the two democracies that
mean so much to the future
of the world."
During the numerous
songs — sung in Hebrew
and Yiddish — the
President and Mrs. Car-
ter hummed and made at-
tempts to sing along. To-
