As the town became
industrialized, the Jewish
community underwent a so-
cial and cultural metamor-
phosis. Old beliefs and cus-
toms were abandoned; a
modern rabbi was engaged;
a Hebrew school was estab-
lished; young people be-
came factory workers; Reb
Feivel's great-grand daugh-
ter joined the Polish
Socialist Party; and her
brother Joseph became a
"maskil" (an enlightened
Jew) and went to Warsaw to
study.
Before long, however, he
became tired of the big city
and returned home. Upon
his arrival, he found his
parents dying and his sister
living with a factory worker
whose' grandfather was a
serf.
The author weaves into
the plot suspense-
causing incidents and
episodes, such as an ex-

a Hasidic Sabbath obser-

impressive rite of exor-

shofar blowing, fervent
prayers, spells, and in-
cantations; the "business
ventures" of the town's
Jewish Robin Hood; and
the love affairs of the
female members of the
