that the grant will enable
the seminary to carry for-
ward work begun in a suc-
cessful summer institute
conducted in 1978 in which
20 professors of humanities
from colleges and univer-
--sities throughout the coun-
try participated.
Shenkman is former
president of Beth Aaron
Synagogue and of the
United Hebrew Schools.
Mrs. Shenkman had
served as president of Beth
Aaron's Sisterhood and had
been a leader of the Michi-
gan Branch of Women's
League for Conservative
Judaism since its inception.
She was president of the
Michigan Branch, 1966-
1968, and Torah Fund
chairman for many years.
She has also served on the
national board of the
Women's League and on its
Torah Fund Cabinet.
Together with her hus-
band, Mrs. Shenkman has
served in leadership posts
with the Jewish Welfare
Federation and the Allied
Jewish Campaign. They
have been active in the
work of Brandeis Univer-
sity, Sinai Hospital Guild,
Jewish National Fund,
ORT, Girl Scouts, Hillel
Day School and Hadassah.
In 1977, Mrs. Shenkman
and her family became a
four-generation .life
member group in Hadassah.

Dr. Marvin A. Rich, exec-
tive vice president and
scientific director of the
Michigan Cancer Founda-
tion and deputy director of
the Comprehensive Cancer
Center of Metropolitan De-
troit, has been elected to the
board of directors of the na-
tional Association of
American Cancer Institutes
at the association's annual
meeting in Washington,
D.C.
The AACI is the principal
national organization of the
nation's major cancer insti-
tutes and cancer research
centers, which are primar-
ily responsible for carrying
out the Nationals Cancer
Program.
Dr. Rich has' held , a
number of national and in-
ternational appOintments,
among them that of senior
adviser to the World Health
Organization's Leukosis
Team and principal
negotiator on .the joint
U.S.-France bilateral
cancer research treaty
negotiating team.
During the period
1962-1972, he established
and directed the depart-
ment of cell biology at the
Albert Einstein Medical
College in Philadelphia,
where he also held a fa-
culty appointment in the
DR. MARVIN RICH
department of mic-
robiology at the medical
school of Temple Univer-
sity.
Dr. Rich has published
more than 250 scientific
papers, books, and articles,
and is responsible for the
isolation of several of the
known oncogenic viruses,
one of which bears his
name.
High Traffic Toll

Support Groups
SPACE, a service of the
Greater Detroit ,Section,
National Council of Jewish
Women, has announced a
new series of support groups
for the widowed, divorced,
and their youngsters. Each
series will run for four con-
secutive weeks.
Programs for the
widowed will begin 8 p.m.
Tuesday and sessions for
the 'divorced will start 8
p.m. Wednesday. All ses-
sions will take place at the
NCJW office, 16400 W. 12
Mile, Suite 106, Southfield.
Both_men and women are
encouraged to participate.
At 8 p.m. Thursday, a
seminar on career and life
planning will be offered.
This series is open to anyone
looking for a new direction,
either in education or job
opportunity.
At 8 p.m. March 19 a
spring support group
series will begin for
youth and teenagers
from single-parent
families.

four-week series.
