Israel Tennis Centers Unit
Holds Meeting in California

Two Nazis Are Opponents
for W. German Presidency

PALM SPRINGS, Calif.
— The fourth annual meet-
ing of the Israel Tennis Cen=-
ters Accociation is being
held in Palm Springs at the
Tennis Club and the Rac-
quet Club.
Some 150 founder mem-
bers are attending from the
U.S., Canada, England, Is-
rael and Mexico.
Highlighting the meeting
is a series of exhibitions by
four Israeli youngsters, age
10-13.
Last year was the
largest fund-raising year
in the ITC's 31/2-year
existence. In the U.S
alone, over $1.4 million
was raised, with another _
$250,000 raised in
Canada and $100,000 in
England. Since • the
founding of the Israel
Tennis Centers Associa-

BONN — West Ger-
many's opposition party,
the Christian Democrats,
has overwhelmingly nomi-
nated former Nazi Party
member Karl Carstens to
run for West Germany's
presidency in May.
German president Walter
Scheel was also a member of -
the Nazi Party while a
member of the German
Luftwaffe.
Carstens claims he joined
the Nazis in 1940 while a
young lawyer on the advice
of a judge.
Both men were cleared
after the war by Allied
de-Nazification commit-
tees.

tion, over $5 million has
been raised internation-
ally.
In 1978, the major center
at Ramat Hasharon, which
is the national Tennis Cen-
ter, was completed, as was
the first satellite center at
Jaffa. ' Construction has
begun on a second satellite
-center in -the northern fron-
tier town of Kiryat Shmona.
New satellite centers are
also planned for Beei.sheba,
Haifa-Acre and Jerusalem.
The goal is to complete the
four satellites by the end of
1979.
The Israel Tennis Center
has also been asked to ex-
tend its teaching programs
throughout Israel in re-
sponse to requests from
municipalities, athletic
clubs and schools.

Church Opposes Sadat Plan

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The chairman of the Senate
Foreign Relations Commit-
tee warned the Carter Ad-
ministration last Friday
that Congress will not ap-
prove any plan it might
submit for supplying Egypt
with major armaments to
establish it as the military
power of the Middle East as
President Anwar Sadat
would like it to be.
"I think you should. be

in my opinion, would never

gram," Sen. Frank Church
told Deputy Assistant Sec-
retary of State Morris
Draper, in a hearing on
arms support for Middle
Eastern countries. Church
was referring to reports that
Egypt wants the United
States to replace much of its
aging Soviet-supplied
equipment.
Church
described
Egypt's request as
"bizarre" and said
"creating a military col-
ossus in Egypt just won't
pass muster here on the
(Capitol) Hill."
He also opposed - aid pro-
grams proposed by the Ad-
ministration for Jordan and
Syria. He observed both
countries were opposing the
Camp David peace accords
that set the current
Israeli-Egyptian treaty
negotiations.
