THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday*, March 9, 1919 23 Dutch Anti-Israel Movie A Statue of Albert Einstein Joins Draws Angry Jewish Protest Washington's Jewish Monuments AMSTERDAM (JTA) — A documentary film with a strong anti-Israel bias, due to be screened on Dutch na- tional television Sunday, has aroused angry protests from the organized Dutch Jewish community and the three congregational branches of Judaism in Hol- land. The 90-minute film, titled "The Place of the Stranger," was previewed for the press under the auspices of The Netherlarvis Ministry of Culture which had sub- , sidized its production. The film was made by a young Dutch Jew, Rudolph Van Dan Berg. Demands that it be banned or that the most controversial se- quences be deleted were re- jected by the ministry on grounds that the protesters had not even seen the film. • But the Ashkenazic congregation in Amster- dam may seek a court- order to delete a se- quence that was made in its synagogue last May at Jets 'Buzz Beirut .‘N,N1‘1 % SALE sid 1 12-DIAMOND OPEN HEART RING PAVE' 14K YELLOW GOLD 1/5 CARAT TOTAL WEIGHT nzi619JTA services celebrating the 30th anniversary of Is- rael's independence and the synagogue building's 50th anniversary. The congregation says it was not aware of the anti- Israel nature of the documentary • when it granted permission to film the services. The synagogue sequence focuses on the sermon deliv- ered by Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi Meir Just which it in- terprets as fiercely nationalistic and anti- Palestinian. Earlier, a Dutch court rejected an appeal by a Jewish journalist, Her- mann Bleich, to order de- letion of .a sequence in which he was inter- viewed without knowl- edge, he says, 6f the film's nature. The documentary depicts Israel as a strongly militaristic state that created the Palestiniadref- ugee problem and has caused great suffering to Palestinians on the -West Bank, Gaza and in south Lebanon. At the same time, the Moslem market town of Nabatiyeh which is con- trolled by Palestinians, a Palestinian camp near Tyre and the Druze town of Has- baya were shelled by heavy artillery. Druze sources in Lebanon believe the Druze town was shelled because it is the home of a Lebanese general who signed an order cutting off payment to the Lebanese Christian forces in south Lebanon. Israel will repor- tedly pay the 400 troops. Their salaries reportedly total $100,000 per month. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the Gompers statue off Massa- chusetts Ave. in 1933, nine years after the death of the London-born leader of the American labor movement. In a related matter, the U.S: Capitol Historical Society has confirmed research by former Re- nsselaer Polytechnic In- stitute Prof. Samuel Re- zneck that a Jewish American naval officer commissioned the statue of Thomas Jefferson that has 'stood in the Capitol Rotunda for more than a - century. According to Prof. Re- zneck, Lt. Uriah Phillips Levy commissioned a French sculptor to produce the statue in 1833. The statue first was displayed cin the White House lawn for many years before Levy convinced Congress to move it to the Capitol in the mid- 1,870s. The monument to Eins- tein was commissioned by the National Academy of Sciences last November for permanent display on the academy's grounds. It is scheduled to be unveiled to coincide with the world- wide celebrations of the 100th anniversary of Eins- tein's birth, March 14. The academy elected Einstein to - the professional organiza- tion in 1942. "Rarely do we undertake to honor a specific scientist other than by election to membership or td office or by award of one of the med- als we administer," said Philip Handler, president of the academy.
