Aid for Israel Handicapped
Provided by JDC Program
JERUSALEM — Handi-
capped Israelis, particu-
larly infants and young
children, will benefit from a
modern treatment method
— the Bobath Technique —
which has been successfully
applied abroad, and which
is now being taught inten-
sively to Israeli therapists
by two American experts, it
was reported by Donald M.
Robinson, president of the
American Joint Distribu-
tion Committee.
The training program,
which began in January is
led by Joan Day Mohr and
Renee Leinguber, therapy
consultants, who have been
teaching the new method all
over the world. Sponsoring
the program in Israel is the
JDC-supported ILAN (the
Association of Handicapped
Children) assisted by the
Ministry of Health, the Na-
tional Insurance Institute
and the Ministry of Defense.
The Bobath Technique is
a modern interdisciplinary
method developed by the
husband and wife team,
Drs. Gerty and Karol
Bobath, which evolved from
their work at the Spastic
Children's Center in Lon-
don.
Explaining the Bobath
- approach Miss Mohr
noted: "We attempt to
deal with the cause of a
disability, not its effect.
Rather than accept the
defect and try to teach
the child to function with
it as other methods do, we
teach the child new
motor skills by restoring
the use of muscles that

had atrophied or been
distorted by improper
use. By bending, knead-
ing and twisting the
child's entire body in a
comprehensive ap-
proach, we put him to
work to utilize latent
abilities that had never
been developed. We
apply physiological and
speech therapy at the
same time by holding the
child in the proper posi-
tion, and show parents
how to do so."
In an effort to introduce a
change in standard practice
in Israel, Dr. Naomi Amir,
of the Bicur Holim Child
Development Center in
Jerusalem, invited the two
American specialists to
conduct a course in 1977.
The effect of that training
has been felt in each of the
units in which the
graduates of the course are
working, resulting in im-
provement in the treatment
of children and the raising
of the professional level of
the other members of the
staff.
Some graduates of the
first course and some who
will participate in courses
this year will be trained to
become Bobath instructors
in institutions treating the
handicapped in Israel.
Many of them will serve in
the network of Child De-
velopment Centers, founded
by JDC, where emphasis is
placed on the earliest possi-
ble detection of disabilities.
Hasidic Singer
Named in Israel
BALTIMORE — Martin
Davidson, 28, the "father of
Hasidic pop music," re-
cently received the 1978
"singer of the year award"
from the Israel Broadcast-
ing Authority in Jerusalem.
This is the first time that
the award went to a non-
Israeli.
Davidson was voted by
the public as Israel's out-
standing singer for 1978 in
the field of modern Jewish
music.
claims the Klan exhibit is
in response to "Black
History Month" now
being national observed.
Olshansky dismissed the
explanation as a "speci-
ous and flimsy canard."
He stated that the library
display is the latest man-
ifestation of an increase in
Klan activity since David
Duke, head of the Knights
of the Ku Klux Klan, visited
Winston-Salem in the fall.
In addition to the library
exhibit, the Klan also ob-
tained a permit to hold a
promotional rally in a pub-
lic school, and permission to
use the library during reg-
ular hours to exhibit and
promote its racist organiza-
tion. The only official rejec-
tion to KKK requests oc-
curred when Mayor Wayne
A. Corpening refused to de-
clare Robert E. Lee's birth-
day "White Pride Day.
Conceit is to nature what

only needless, but it impairs
what it would improve.
