`Iran Would Give Moral Aid
to PLO, But No Weaponry'
NEW YORK (JTA) — Dr.
Ibrahim Yazdi, Iran's de-
puty prime minister and a
close aide of the Ayatollah
Ruhollah Khomeini, said in
a television interview that
the new Iranian govern-
ment would provide the
Palestine Liberation
Organization with "politi-
cal and moral" aid, but not
with troops or weapons.
Interviewed via satellite
from Teheran on the Public
Broadcasting Services
MacNeil-Lehrer Report,"
Yazdi said the PLO merited
Iran's political and moral
support because the Pales-
tinians were an "oppressed"
people.
He said Iran was not
planning to provide the
PLO with arms or men, not-
ing -he believed they did not
need such aid. Yazdi, who is
in charge of carrying out the
Islamic revolution in Iran,
added that for the near fu-
ture Iran would be chiefly
involved with its own
domestic problems.
His remarks seemed to
contradict the numerous
statements made last
week by PLO chieftain
Yasir Arafat when he was
shepherded around Iran
by Yazdi. Arafat implied
that Iran would now join
the fighting against Is-
rael by supplying the
PLO with arms and put-
ting its troops on the
frontline.
In addition a report from
Teheran quoted Hani Al-
Hassan, a leader of El Fatah
and the head of the PLO's
new office in Teheran, as
saying the new Iranian gov-
ernment has made "the lib-
eration of Jerusalem from
Israeli occupation one of its
foremost religious and
moral commitments." He
said Iranian leaders, includ-
ing Khomeini, made this
pledge last week to Arafat.
He said that much of the
discussion between Arafat
and Khomeini was over the
establishment of "a common
strategy and a common ap- -
proach" against Israel.
In the PBS interview,
Yazdi said Iran would not
interfere in the efforts to
reach an Israeli-Egyptian
peace treaty because he said
no matter what type of
document was signed by
those two countries it would
be meaningless..

PARIS (JTA) — The
Palestine Liberation
Organization has called on
France to play a more active
role in Middle East affairs
and to submit the Arab-
Israeli issue -to the United
Nations Security Council.
The head of the PLO's
political department,
Farouk Khadoumi, pressed
French Foreign Minister
Jean Francois-Poncet to act
in this direction in consulta-
tion with its West European
partners.
Khadoumi, according to
Palestinian sources, said it
is of "the utmost urgency" to
have the Security Council
re-examine the entire Mid-
dle East issue and vote a
new resolution which
"would safeguard the rights
of the Palestinian people:"

Administration
GENEVA (JTA) — The
United Nations Human
Rights Commission voted
22-2 in favor of a resolution
that condemned Israel's
practices in the occupied
Arab territories and urged
other countries not to rec-
ognize changes made by Is-
rael in those territories.
The resolution also called
on Israel to release all Arab
prisoners detained as a re-
sult of what it called their
struggle for self-
determination.
Only the United States
and Canada voted
against the resolution.
There were eight absten-
tions: Australia, Austria,
Brazil, Uruguay, France,
West Germany, Ivory
Coast and Portugal.
The Ivory Coast represen-
tative stated that he would
not vote for an anti-Israel
resolution at a time when
Israeli-Egyptian peace
talks have resumed at
Camp David. It was the first
time in many years that the
West African country has
abstained in such a resolu-
tion.
