Friday, February 23, 1919 5 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Americans Give Up Seats for Last Israelis (Continued from Page 1) The end of what had mainly been economic re- lations between Israel and Iran came amid re- ports from Teheran that the government con- trolled by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini had turned over the Israeli trade mission building to the Palestine Liberation Organization. Iran an- nounced that it was ex- pelling all Israelis. PLO chief Yasir Arafat, Mho Sunday received a Wrm welcome in Iran, presided at the takeover and was reported to have said: We freed Iran today , and we will do the same with Palestine tomorrow. Under the leadership of Ayatollah Khomeini and with the help of Iranian freedom fighters, we will free Palestine." Arafat, who was the first foreign official visiting Iran since the revolution, was told by Khomeini that Iranians would "turn to the issue of victory over Israel" once the new Iranian gov- ernment had consolidated its strength. Arafat repor- tedly declared that the Ira- nian revolution had "turned upside down" the balance of forces in the Middle East. He said "every Iranian free- dom fighter is represented in the Palestinian revolu- tion." Several letters of con- gratulation were sent to Khomeini by -West Bank leaders, including one by the chairman of the -East Jerusalem Supreme Mos- lem Council, the highest Moslem authority under Is- raeli administration. His letter called Khomeini's victory "a victory of the Moslem revolution" which laid "an important basis for the liberation of the occupied territory." Israel Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan said the events in Iran stress the strategic importance of Sharm el-Sheikh. Another lesson learned from the Ira- nian revolution was the limited intervention ability of the U.S. in cases of inter- nal changes in other coun- tries, he said. An Israeli security offi- cer told a closed meeting of a Knesset committee that if the ayatollah's government stabilized, • Israel might be facing Iranian soldiers on eastern front within two three years. Israeli Energy Minister Yitzhak Modai has recom- mended that Israel concen- trate on developing alterna- tives to oil as an energy source because 96 percent of the world's oil resources are closed to Israel. Modai said Israel's oil reserves were satisfactory at present and an adequate supply is as- sured for this year. He said that the crisis in Iran which has ended oil sales to Israel and the general hike in oil prices were reason enough for Israel to look for alterna- tive energy sources. He noted as an example the . coal-fired electric power plant being built at Mad- era and called for the de- velopment of systems to exploit solar energy. Modai and members of the Knesset agreed that too little was being done to con- serve energy. Meir Amit of the Shai faction suggested that Israel buy oil directly from producers to avoid the costs of middlemen. Modai replied that the few coun- tries willing to sell oil to Is- rael insist that it be done through a third party. Shmuel Tamir of Likud ob- served that Israel has one of the highest oil consumption rates in the world, averag- ing 42 percent more per if ' 20% DISCOUNT OFF ORIGINAL PRICES!
