Frances Friedlaender Dies,
Was Active in Zionist Affairs

Funeral services were
held last Friday for Frances
Friedlaender, 87, an early
participant in Zionist ac-
tivities in Detroit.
Mrs. Friedlaender some
50 years ago was active with
her late husband, Leo Fried-
laender, in pioneering De-
troit Zionist efforts, when
he founded the first Zionist
Engineering Society in De-
troit which served as an in-
spiration for similar groups
her cities.
rn in Poland, Mrs.
Friedlaender lived 60
years in Detroit. She was
an original member of the
Jewish National Fund

and held membership in
Hadassah. She was an
organizer of the now de-
funct Hashahar Bnai
Zion Catip which was
among the first Zionist
actions groups here.
. She leaves two sons, Dr.
Alex and Dr. Sidney; a
daughter, Mrs. Bernard
(Sara) Stern of- Muskegon;
eight grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren.

Albert Winnick

Albert Winnick, founder
and president of Albert
Building Co. from 1937 to
1960, died Feb. 20.
A former Detroiter of
Pompano Beach, Fla., Mr.
Winnick was a past board
member of the Metropolitan
Detroit Builders Associa-
tion and the City of Hope.
He was a past vice president
of the Detroit
Businessmen's Group of the
City of Hope.
He is survived by his wife,
Ida; two daughters, Mrs.
Richard (Audrey) Friedman
of Southfield and Mrs. Har-
vey (Suzanne) Schatz of
West Bloomfield; a sister,
Mrs. Jack (Ann) Ab-
ramovitz; and five
grandchildren.

Alfred Levitt, 64

__Alfred Levitt, a retired
umber,
died Feb. 17 at age
pl
64.
Born in New York, Mr.
Levitt lived 40 years-in De-
troit. He was a member of
the Flying Tigers during
World War II, serving four
years in China with Gen-
eral Chennault in the 14th
Air Force.
He leaves his mother,
Mrs. Benjamin s(Gussie)
Levitt; and two brothers,
Jack and Robert.

Sima Liepah, 90

Sima Liepah, active in
Jewish communal causes,
died Feb. 15 at age 90.
Born in Russia, Mrs.
Liepah lived 56 years in De-
troit. She was a board
member of Club One,
Pioneer Women, and was
active in efforts on behalf of
- Jewish National Fund.

Gordon Berman, owner of

for the past 29 years, died
Feb. 16 at age 61.
He was born in Toronto
and resided in Adrian. Mr.

Traverse City; a brother,
Robert; and two sisters,
Mrs. Gussie Black and Mrs.
Sidney (Fay) Reibel.

Mrs. Steinberg

Dorothy J. Steinberg, a
social worker for the state of
Michigan for the past 12
years, died Feb. 18 at age
59.
A native Detroiter, Mrs.
Steinberg was graduated
from Wayne State Univer-
sity. She was - a member of
Cong. Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses.
She leaves her husband,'
Arthur J.; a son, Dr. Joel; a
daughter, Mrs. Alan (Lois)
Winer; two sisters, Mrs.
Jacob (Mildred) Rosenberg
and Mrs. Morris (Dolly)
Raskas of St. Louis, Mo.;
and two grandchildren.

Rabbi Rafalin,
Led Mexico Jews

MEXICO CITY (JTA) —
Rabbi David Shlomo Rafa-
lin, the leading rabbi of
Mexico is dead at age 79.
Lithuanian-born, Rafalin
came to Mexico in 1935 from
Havana, Cuba. He was
active her in the Zionist
movement and in com-
munal affairs. He was the
president of Mizrachi, the
Jewish National Fund and
Keren Hayesod.
