The unit will be headed by immunologist Ruth Arnon and will include sci- entists from various fields. One of the diseases is Bilharzia (or schis- tosomiasis), a debilitating fluke-worm-caused malady- continuously reinfected. which afflicts between 200 Weizmann scientists and 300 million people in have shown in previous Asia, South America, the studies that an antigene- Caribbean and Africa, in- tic determinant of a cer- cluding some three- tain virus can be synthe- quarters of the population of sized, and When it is in- Egypt. jected into an animal, it Moreover, the victims are induces the production of antibodies that allow it to fight off the virus. "guided missiles" that would carry medication to the exact spot on the cell of the parasites where it could be most effective. Such "guided missiles" — actu- ally antibody molecules that seek out the site of the infection or other mac- romolecules to which the in- fecting cells show selective affinity — are also being in- vestigated in cancer re- search. It is hoped that by hitting the site of the infection it- self, the dose of medication can be reduced, thus saving money and lessening the toxic side-effects of many anti-parasitic drugs. Israeli's Graph Innovation Published in U.S JERUSALEM — A new method of graphing statisti- - ' cal data has been developed - - 13,, Prof. Roberto Bachi of Department of Statis- ' tiL, of the Hebrew Univer- sity with the cooperation of the Geography Depart- - ment. 1- - Prof. Bachi's method ap- pears as the major portion of a special technical paper on graphical methods pub- lished by the U.S. Bureau of 1_ the Census this month. innovation not only 1 The - makes possible the graphic representation of types of • statistical data which can- not be represented by classical methods, but is applicable in the field of car- lit . tography (statistical maps) , , as well. Important informa- tion such as traffic intensity over roads or air traffic can - be easily and accurately re- presented on a map by Prof. Bachi's method of Graphic - Rational Patterns (GRP). The classical methods of graphing are mostly restricted to the graphic representation of one variable: in the distribu- tion of population by age, for example, age is the variable. The distribu- tion of two variables — such as distribution of marriages by ages of bride and groom — was already very difficult to graph. It could only be represented in a three- M.• dimensional way and _ projected on paper by computer, but was dif- ficult to interpret. A new method of graphing was direly needed. Some 10 years ago, Prof. Bachi proposed a method of GRP in which units are re- presented by squares of small area, tens by an area 10 times as large. This method makes possible the 4 representation of any number between 1 and 100, - sufficient in practice for presenting any type of t statistical data as a unit of GRP. There was only one draw- -- * -- This method was im- ical as it was tedious to oh i prepare graphs by sticking the previously prepared patterns onto the given paper. This technical difficulty was overcome with the aid of Michael Stier, head of the Laboratory for Automated Cartography, who auto- mated this method of graph- ing by means of a plotter at- tached to the computer. The first examples of au- tomated GRP were pre- MARK BELTAIRE 3EustELI2 to SNatt5 112 gaff MISS BLUSTEIN Mr. and Mrs. Seymour H.
