social tide, until 1933,
when, in its most sumptu-
ous headquarters on Fifth
Ave. and 44th St., it suc-
cumbed to the ravages im-
posed by Prohibition.
Delmonico's very first
menu ran to 11 pages, offer-
ing a choice of 12 soups, 28
beef entrees, 47 of poultry,
56 varieties of fish, 51 veg-
etable and egg dishes, and
47 . choices of dessert .. .
Beefsteak went for 25 cents
a portion, pie for a dime a
slice, any one of the 12 soups
was yours for a nickel, and
so was a cup of coffee with
real cream . . . Costliest
item on the menu was roast
canvasback duck . . . with
12 side dishes . . . at $1.50
. . . and no tipping allowed.
If there ever was such a
word as inflation in those
days, it's a sure bet that no
patron of Delmonico's ever
heard it.
Refuseniks Urge
Ongoing Support
of Jackson Bill
NEW YORK (JTA) —
Sixty-eight Jewish re-
fuseniks from nine Soviet
cities have appealed to Con-
gress to continue to support
the Jackson Amendment,
which they declared to be
"the only legislative enact-
ment which, to some extent
at least, acts as an obstacle
to the unbridled tyranny of
the Soviet authorities in
their emigration policies."
The text was relayed by
London activist Michael
Sherbourne to the Student
Struggle for Soviet Jewry
and Union of Councils for
Soviet Jews.
The document is a re-
sponse to a bill intro-
duced into Congress by
Illinois Sen. Adlai
Stevenson III which the
groups said "would, in ef-
fect, destroy the Jackson
Amendment," which
links trade credits with
freer emigration.
The Stevenson bill would
reduce the standard of com-
pliance from an "assurance"
by the country concerned to
a "determination" by the
U.S. President, would limit
Congress from the present
yearly review to once every
five years, and would in-
crease maximum credits
from $300 million to $2 bil-
lion.
