WEIGHT WATCHERS
International has prepared
two public service pam-
phlets on nutrition and the
young . . . "Be The Best" is a
lively brochure on general
nutrition written for teens
and answering questions
they would ask most fre-
quently . . . It is illustrated
by a teenage cartoonist and
available free by writing to
Weight Watchers, 15999 W.
12 Mile, P.O. Box 125 LV,
Southfield, Mich. 48076 .. .

addressed envelope.
The United Nations Gen-
eral Assembly, deeply dis-
turbed that "too many chil-
dren are deprived of even
tilt" most elementary
amenities of life" has pro-
claimed 1979 as the Inter-
national Year of the Child.
It is quite amazing that in
the United States, one of the
world's most progressive
countries, malnutrition re-
mains a major problem
among children in their
teens — privileged and un-
derprivileged alike.
"According to some of
our most prominent ex-
perts in this field," re-
ports Dr. W.H. Sebrell,
medical director for
Weight Watchers Inter-
national and a specialist
in the field of human nut-
rition, "teen-age boys are
generally found not to be
getting the recommended
allowances of ascorbic
acid and thiamine .. .
And for teenage girls, the
nutrition story is almost
horrifying . . . They are
among the most poorly
fed groups in our popula-
tion, with diets low in cal-
cium and iron, and some-
times in protein, ascorbic
acid, and thiamine, as
well."
In a country that prides
itself on its abundance of
everything, this lack of nut-

ritional adequacy in the
diets of our teens seems in-
comprehensible, particu-
larly since it is in adoles-
cence that a major growth
spurt, as well as matura-
tion, occurs.
"As might be imagined,"
Dr. Sebrell explains, "the
nutritional needs to meet
this rapid growth rate are
enormous."
So it seems that teen-
agers, at a time in their de-
velopment when good nutri-
tion is most necessary, are
often suffering from mal-
nutrition.
- How? Why? Poor food
habits, lack of nutrition
education, inadequate or
no breakfasts, snacking
on empty calories, self-
imposed fad diets, irregu-
lar eating patterns, too
little of some foods, too
much of others and fi-
nally, too little or too
much . . . period.
What can you do as a
teen-ager or a parent of a
teen-ager to lower the risk
of malnutrition in any
form? . . . Here are some
recommendations from
Weight Watchers Interna-
tional:
• Educate yourself and
your child on nutrition. Be
sure to consult the legiti-
mate experts. Speak to your
family physician or the local
public health nutritionist
and take action on their
recommendations.
• It is recommended that
normal-weight teens take
in approximately 2,500
calories a day in a variety of
meats, fish, fruits, vegeta-
bles, whole grains, and
grain products, dairy prod-
ucts and polyunsaturated
fats.
• To meet the needs for
iron, a serving of liver
