NEW YORK — The na-
tional attention focused on
the debate raging among
Conservative Jewish lead-
ers over ordaining women
as rabbis, was deplored by
Agudath Israel of America
because it "diverts the pub-
lic's awareness from the
core issue: the true char-
acter of Conservative
Judaism."
This controversy is "sim-
ply one more symptom of
the deeper malaise from
which Conservatism suffers
as the result of its refusal to
accept the authenticity of
Torah as divinely revealed
at Sinai," Aguda's state-
ment said. -
Agudath Israel called
upon Conservative rabbis
"who disagree with the
anti-Halakha positions
taken by_ the Conservative
movement," to "take the
single decisive step of com-
pletely withdrawing from
the Conservative fold and
returning to genuine Or-
thodoky."
Ghali, in Belgium on a
three-day official visit, said
on television that the Egyp-
tian negotiating team at the
forthcoming Camp David
conference "will give top
priority to an agreement in-
cluding a solution to the
Palestinian problem."
He said Egypt "will not
negotiate on behalf of the
Palestinians. It is only
trying to obtain. a
framework to enable
them and the Israelis to
negotiate directly." Ghali
said that the situation in
Iran makes it urgent to
reach a peace agreement.

No Damage Done
TEL AVIV (JTA) — An
explosive charge went off in
Petah Tikva early Sunday
morning but caused little
damage. Although the
bomb was planted on Pins-
ker Street, one of the city's
main thoroughfares, it de:
tonated before many people
were out.
Several Arab workers in
the vicinity were interro-
gated.
On Friday, police sappers
safely dismantled a bomb
found in a package on a
soldier's hitchhiking sta-
tion near Ashkelon. A
soldier had spotted the
suspicious-looking parcel._
