THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Israel Colleges Get Revson Grant NEW YORK , — Two grants totaling $1,500,000 to promote higher education and scientific research in Is- rael have been awarded to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Weiz- mann Institute of Science of Rehovot by the Charles H. Revson Foundation of New York. Announcement of the award, which will be shared equally by the Israeli in- stitutions, was made in a joint statement issued by Ambassador Avraham Harman, president of the Hebrew University, and Prof. Michael Sela, president of the Weizmann Institute of Science. Under terms of the four-year grant, funds al- located to the Hebrew University will be used to create 12 new Charles H. Revson Fellowships for postdoctoral lecturers and to provide tenured faculty appointments for a small number of out- standing academicians. Funds designated for the Weizmann Institute will be used to establish seven new career development chairs to provide follow-through support and research un- derwriting for a cadre of select young scientists at the most formative and crit- ical juncture in their careers, upon completion of their doctoral and postdoc- toral studies. Internal Unrest to Follow Peace fl JERUSALEM (ZINS) — Haifa University sociologist Dr. Sami Semucha believes that Israel will face an erup- tion of internal unrest once peace comes to the Middle East. - He reports that the aver- age income of an Ashkenazi Jew is twice that of the av- erage income of an Oriental Jew. In the high schools, the proportion between Ashkenazim and Sephar- dim is 3/1 in favor of the Ashkenazim. In the universities there are five times as many Ashkenazim as Sephardim. The percentage of Sephar- dim in the political and economic elite of the coun- try is only four percent while their number in the general population has al- ready risen to 55 percent. The sociologist foresees the growth of a mass move- ment of the Oriental Jewish community which will exploit every conceivable means (including demonst- rations) to proclaim and de- fend their interests. Public Attitude May Hurt Israel TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Fol- lowing a U.S. tour, former Israeli Prime Minister Yit- zhak Rabin expressed con- cern over the preoccupation of Americans with domestic affairs and the lace of in- terest and impatience with Middle East affairs. He said this change in at- titude will hurt Israel's in- . terests. Friday, February 16, 1919 11 Delta puts on the ritz to Florida at Super Saver fares.
