`Hasidic Insights'

Presented as "A Guide for
the Entangled," "Hasidic
Insights" by Rabbi Mattis
Kantor (Ktav), draws ex-
tensively on traditional
teachings.
The basic thesis and the
author's approach is sum-
marized in the foreword in
which Rabbi Kantor exp-
lains:
"This is not a book about
Kabala or Hasidic thought.
It is a book of Kabala and
Hasidic thought — in En-
glish.
"What I say here is not
new. It is mostly explicit
and partly implicit in To-
rah. To indicate sources,
however, would make
reading the book too
tedious. That is a subject
for a separate and more
scholarly work.
"To someone who is very
familiar with Habad
Hasidus, the teachings of
Lubavitch, the Experience
of reading this book may be
much the same as walking
down a street one has not
seen for many years. It is all
so familiar, yet superficially
it looks so different.

"There are a number of
details in this book that
may seem irrelevant, yet I
have found the need to in-
clude them for purposes of
accuracy. On the other
hand, I find that I have left
so much unsaid. Every
question answered is many
more questions raised, and I
have not indicated the
sources (explicit and im-
plicit) Witty ideas. I suspect
that as I have found the
need to write this, I will find
the need to continue, with
the help of God."

Unit Against
Intermarriage
Is Proposed

NEW YORK — Rabbi
Abraham B. Hecht,
spiritual leader of Brook-
lyn's Cong. Shaare Zion, is
forming a Jewish group to
combat intermarriage
among young American
Jews.
According to Rabbi
Hecht, who is also president
of the Rabbinical Alliance of
America, "intermarriage in
the U.S. is achieving
through attrition what Hit-
ler failed to accomplish
through annihilation;
namely the disappearance
of one-third to one-half our
youth through the ravages
of total assimilation."
A central feature of Rabbi
Hecht's plan will be a net-
work of counseling centers
where young men and
women contemplating mar-
riage with a gentile may
discuss their situation and
give Judaism one last
chance.
The counseling centers
will also serve parents of
intermarrying young
Jews and will guide them
in how to deal with their
offspring and argue the
case against marriage
with a non-Jewish part-
ner.
