Ariel Sharon Proposes the Return
of El Arish, Limits to Autonomy

JERUSALEM (JTA)" —
Agriculture Minister and
Cabinet hawk Ariel Sharon
Tuesday proposed that Is-
rael hand back El Arish to
Egypt as a gesture of good-
will designed to get the
peace talks back on track.
He spoke in a broadcast
press conference over the
army radio and repeated his
proposal in an interview on
Israeli television.
But he hedged the gesture
with the proviso that the
Cabinet first hold a debate
on the nature of the prop-
osed West Bank autonomy
and related security issues.
Sharon has long sought to
force such a debate — with
the aim of securing Cabinet
decisions that would limit
the power of the proposed
Palestinian autonomous
body.
Sharon sharply at-
tacked the U.S. consulate
in Jerusalem for "inter-
fering" on the West
Bank and for being "in-
volved very actively" in
efforts directed towards
"bringing about the crea-
tion of a Palestinian en-
tity and a Palestinian
state."

Sharon alleged that U.S.
officials offered legal aid to
West Bankers (apparently
in land confiscation cases)
and said they were involved
in other, unspecified, ac-
tivities "behind the back of
Israel."

•
ARIEL SHARON -
On the El Arish proposal,
which . has been stated
periodically during the past
year or more, Sharon said it
was he who had first prop-
osed it, to Premier
Menahem Begin, on the day
Sadat came to Jerusalem in
November 1977. But the
Cabinet majority turned it
down.

speech as chairman, told the
national executive of the
Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith meeting in Palm
Beach, Fla., that "it is time
for plain speaking with the
government of Saudi

fundamental review" of
U.S. policy toward the oil-
rich kingdom, including the
sale of 60 F-15 jet fighters
that involved heated debate
last spring.
Church called for an end
to U.S. "pressure" on Israel

Egypt that goes beyond the

Old City Bomb
Kills 1, Injures 2

JERUSALEM (JTA) — A
powerful explosion in the
Old City Sunday killed one
Arab and severely injured
two others. Police said the
blast, a few hundred feet
from the Western Wall, was
caused by the premature de-
tonation of a bomb being as-
sembled by terrorists.
Meanwhile, the United
Nations announced that six
soldiers attached to the Un-
ited Nations Interim Force
in Lebanon (UNIFIL) were
killed as a result of a clash
with Palestinian terrorists
who attempted to infiltrate
a security zone.
Two Fijian soldiers were
killed and three were
wounded in the skirmish.
Four Norwegian soldiers
were killed shortly after-
wards when their helicopter
evacuating the wounded
had a "technical failure"
and crashed, according to
UN spokesman Rudolf Staj-
duhar.
