Gambling Does Not Threaten Las Vegas Jewish Community
MONTREAL (JTA) —
The gambling tables of Las
Vegas are not a threat to
Jewish life in the expanding
Jewish community but,
viewed as an industry, it
provides an assured income
for Las Vegas Jews_ and
non-Jews alike, according
to a report from Las Vegas.
The report in the Cana-
dian Jewish News quoted
Leo Wilner, executive direot
for of Conservative Temple
Beth Sholom as asserting
that "Jewish children grow-

Gambling does not worry
either Wilner or Rabbi
Stephen Weisberg of Re-
form Cong. Ner Tamid but
they are worried _about the
city's "limited exposure" to
Jewish culture. Both were
reported to feel that as the
Las Vegas community, es-
timated currently to be in
excess of 10,000, continues
•to grow, the cultural lag will
decrease.
The growth of Nevada
University at Las Vegas
during the past decade
from 800 students to the
present 9,000 has proba-
bly done culturally, at
least to some degree,
what the "strip" has done
economically for Las
Vegas. One result has
been, the News reported,
that more Jewish youth
remain in Las Vegas fof
their college education
and the campus Hillel
membership has in-
creased substantially.
The focal point for or-
ganized Jewish life in Las
Vegas is Temple Beth
Sholom and its adjoining
Jewish community center.

The synagogue, which was,
founded in 1948, has 820
member families. -In addi-
tion to its own Hebrew
school and Hebrew high
school, the synagogue also
provides facilities for the ci-
ty's only Hebrew day school,
which has seven grades.
Cong. Ner Tamid cur-
rently uses facilities of the
local Episcopal church.
Rabbi Weisberg has been
Ner Tamid's spiritual
leader since it was started
four years ago. It now has
260 families.

Wilner also reported that

tourists are rejected.
According to the report,
Wilner responds to tourist

that the caller "pray now,
play later." He also reported
receiving "crisis calls" from
Jewish tourists who have
gambled away their funds.
He offers free use of the
synagogue phone in
these situations but, he
reported, most visitors
with such bad luck at the
tables are too embarras-
sed to call friends or fam-
