Berkovitz is a good-player for Israel but certainly is not of NBA caliber and is making a mistake in upset- ting the Maccabi people by his shenanigans. The game was well played and it appeared Israel would go down 1-0 when in the last second, just prior to the gun going off, Avrami of Jerus- _ lem Betar socked the ball, through the net tying the score. The German goalten der had his hand on Av- rami's hard shot but merely deflected the ball. Jerusalem Betar, now in second place in league standings, is scheduled to play the strong Liverpool 11 some time in April and, it is anticipated, a sellout crowd of 54,000 people will attend the match slated for Ramat Gan Stadium. Jerusalem Betar will-then play a re- turn game in Liverpool the Tollowig_inonth. • * * * Yossi Miramowich, cur- rently of Hapoel Tel Aviv, who once coached Beloit College in Wisconsin to an undefeated season, is anx- ious to come to the States in a year or two in order- to handle the reins of one of the American professional 11s. Yossi is very popular here, liked by all, with a keen sense of humor and is very knowledgeable in the game and would certainly be an improvement over some of the coaches now working in the U.S. * * * With the Olympics not too far off, it appears that the only recruited American out of the seven "signed" who seems likely to make the Israeli Olympic squad is Dan Gardner, the discus thrower from the West Coast. He has been hurl- ing the discus 66 meters, aproximately 10 meters under the world record, but well enough to qual- ify him in that sport. The other tracksters, if they return to Israel to train in June of this year, don't figure to qualify based on their best times and dis- tances. . • I was invited to attend a meeting of the Israeli Olympic Committee and almost all of the committee members were opposed to the recruitment of athletes for the sole purpose of corn- peting in sports. The Olympic people feel that this type of athlete, basically, is not a true oleh and is only interested in getting a free trip to Mos- cow. WERE GREAT AT PARTIES! NCCJ Will Cite Bob Hope Broken Promises NEW YORK (ZINS) — According to two Israelis writing in the New York Times, President Jimmy Carter threatened in 1977 to intervene with "friends of Israel in the U.S." if Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan did not accept the idea of a Palestinian home- land. Dayan reportedly told Carter that Israel would never accept a - Palestinian homeland and listed the history of American broken promises: - - "During the Holocaust, President Roosevelt saw fit not to open the gates to JewiSh refugees. In 1948 while our nation fought for survival against all the Arab states, President Truman though he had recognized Israel — refused to give us even one rifle, not one rifle! "In 1956, after the Sinai Campaign, President Eisenhower promised us free navigation in inter- national waters for our unilateral evacuation of Sinai. But in 1967, when Egypt blockaded the Straits of Tiran, we had to break the blockade our- selves. When we asked President Johnson, in May of 1967, to fulfill Ike's promise, the Presi- dent said to us, "The U.S. is not the policeman of the world." ' So, Dayan concluded, Is- rael did not- expect anyone to save its people from another Holocaust. "But it will not happen, because we will prevent it." NEW YORK — Bob Hope, the globe-trotting entertainer, will receive the 14th Charles Evans Hughes Gold Medal of the National Conference of Christians and Jews at its annual dinner at the Waldorf- Astoria Hotel on Feb. 26. The award is bestowed "for courageous leadership in governmental, civic and humanitarian affairs. The award is named for Chief Justice Hughes, one of the founders of the NCCJ in 1928.
