Hoveve Yiddish Movement

NEW YORK (JTA) -- S.
L. Schneiderman, past pres-
ident of the Yiddish Pen
Center, made a passionate
appeal to start a worldwide
Hoveve Yiddish ("Friends of
Yiddish") movement, pat-
terned on the historic
Hoveve Zion movement at
the end of the last century.
This movement of -
"Friends" of the Yiddish
language and literature
should embrace secular as
well as religious Jews of
every conviction who have a
sentiment for Yiddish, the
language of our martyred
brethren, he said.
Speaking at the banquet
at the Roosevelt Hotel
celebrating the 30th an-
niversary of the Jewish Cul-
tural Congress in which
over 500 representatives of
various Jewish organiza-
tions participated,
Schneiderman warned:
"We are the last gener-
ation of Yiddish-
speaking Jews who have
the duty to preserve the
values of the Yiddish
civilization that has pro-
duced a great literature
that achieved the highest
