Israel. The "open skies" agreement between the two governments to- gether with the approval for El Al to use four more gate- ways in the U.S., is no doubt a milestone in the aviation and tourism relations bet- ween Israel and the United States. We noticed immediately following this agreement three major developments: airfares to Israel were sub- stantially reduced, private and charter companies planned and advertised charter flights to Israel and El Al announced its plan to use Chicago and Miami as two additional gateways in 1979, keeping the option of using the remaining two (one will most likely be Los Angeles) in 1980. Charter flights were scheduled from various cities in the United States, but it appears that many charter flights will not leave the ground this winter as advertised simply be- cause of a low demand. The majority of travelers to Is- rael prefer to go with scheduled carriers which offer daily flights (some are non-stop from New York with 747 jumbo jet service), using fares which allow more flexibility in regard to length of stay and changing of departure dates. Some travel experts be- lieve that the main reason for charter "soft sales" is that Israel's image as a sun and fun destination is not yet well known by the general public. Another reason mentioned was that the charter com- panies are allowed to cancel flights up to 10 days prior to departure, for if a departure will not reach the high load factor necessary for a profit, the flight might be cancelled. Security measures taken by scheduled airlines, especially El Al, also played a role in the mar- ket trend. An improvement in travel to Israel is expected beginning April 2 for Mid- western passengers to Is- ,rael when El Al will com- mence its bi-weekly flights to Israel from Chicago. El Al will use a 747 jumbo jet on this route which will depart We bring ISRAEL a little closer to your heart! CALL YOUR TRAVEL AGENT! E L IZ VA 127N. 17 *Based On 9 Day Group Fare - Sat. & Tues.
