to the warm words of wel-

special responsibility to
stay together and work to-,

between Israel and the U.S.

must be strengthened, for-

so in the future as it was i
the past," he said.
Later, at a dinner in his
honor hosted by Begin,
Ford said: "If the current
peace negotiations prove
successful, then the Is-
raelis, the American
Jews . and the moderate
Arabs will rejoice. If the
negotiations fail, then the
Russians and the ex-
tremist Arabs will re-
joice. If you look at it that
way, then there is only
one thing to say: I do not
want to please the Rus-
sians and the ex-
tremists."
Former Premier Yitzhak
Rabin was among the 60 in-
vited guests. He and Ford
greeted each other as old
friends. - Rabin was Israel's
Ambassador to Washington
and got to know Ford well.
The former President and
Mrs. Ford were greeted at
the • airpost by Justice
Minister Shmuel Tamir on
behalf of the government
and by Rabin, now a Labor
MK. Thanking Tamir for
his words of welcome, Ford
said: -
"I come as a private citzen
but I come as an individual
whose record shows, I be-
lieve, the desire on my part
to help in any way I can to
make constructive headway
in the long, controversial
and difficult issue in he
Middle East. We seek peace
and security, peace with
justice, and if I, as a private
citizen, can find any way
that I can be helpful in an
unofficial way, you can rest

Ford recalled his several
meetings- with Mrs. Meir.
"This is an opportunity_ to
pay tribute to what she did
for Israel and for humanity-
in general,", he said. The
Fords will visit Saudi
Arabia and Syria after leav-
ing Israel.
Ford refrained Monday
from any comment on the
status of East Jerusalem as
he toured the city, guided by
Jerusalem Mayor Teddy
Kollek. .
Mr. and Mrs. Ford toured
the city with both the
American and the Israeli
flags flying on their black
limousine. They visibly
enjoyed the tour, although
they admitted their tired-
ness following a week of
Mideast travel. Ford said
the tour "has whetted our
appetite to come back and
get better acquainted." But
when Mayor Kollek made
repeated hints aboul- Is-
rael's disappointment with

Yehuda Getz, the rabbi of
the wall, presented-the
Fords with a Hebrew Bible,
which he had dedicated in
English to the - Fords "in
recognition of your friend-
ship to the Jewish nation
that dwells in Zion."
Then the couple went up
the Temple Mount, visiting
the Mosque of Omar. They
Were blessed by Mustafa
Ansari, the keeper of the
mosque, who told them that
400 million Moslems prayed
for peace.
"Although Jerusalem has
problems," Kollek told
Ford, "its people live to-
gether respecting the
others' identity. They have
learned to live. together."
At lunch, in a restaurant
overlooking the walls of the
Old City, Ford could see liv-
ing examples of co-existence
in Jerusalem: the city's two
chief rabbis sat side by side
with leaders of the Chris-

tian churches in the city and
with Judge Nihad
Jarallah of the Moslem
Religious Court.
Ford was presented
with book on
Jerusalem, and his wife
received a golden hamsa
(a traditional Arab sym-
bol of a hand, a lucky
charm). They then pro-
ceeded to the King David
Hotel, where Jewish
Agency Executive
Chairman Leon Dulzin
held a reception in the")
honor.
The long day ended with
another reception, given by
President Yitzhak Navon
and his wife Ofira at the
presidential residence. The
festive dinner was attended
by Cabinet ministers, the
two chief rabbis, the Chief of
Staff and other notables.
Navon stressed the
friendship Ford -has always
shown to Israel. "The
interim agreement with
Egypt which was signed at
the time of your administra-
tion was an essential step on
the road to Camp David,
and we all hope that it will
end with a true and lasting
peace."
Ford replied by stressing
the importance of the spe-
cial relations between the
two countries, and by prais-
ing the contribution of U.S.
Jewry to the welfare and
development of America.
The Fords' scheduled visit
to the Lebanese border
region on Tuesday was can-
celled because of continued
shelling in the area.

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
_Officials in Prime Minister
Menahem Begin's bureau
asserted Tuesday that he
and the government had
been acting energetically
for a lengthy period now to
arrange means of bringing
Iranian Jews to Israel. The
officials said most of what
was -being done had to be
kept secret for the present.
They noted that at the
moment Iranian Jews who
wished to do so could leave
the country — and their dis,
tinct implication was that
not many were choosing to
leave despite Israel's efforts
to avail them of the oppor-
tunity and facilities to do so.
The officials denied
strongly the allegations of
neglect and mishandling of
the, situation made Monday
by leading Labor Party fig-
ures, among them former
Foreign Minister- Yigal Al-
Ion.
Allon charged "mas-
sive mismanagement" on
the part of the govern-
ment and the Jewish
Agency in regard to the
Iranian Jewry situation.
Speaking to the 'Labor
Knesset caucus, Allon
said thousands of Iranian
Jews wanted to go to Is-

rael but were unable ' to
make the technical ar-
rangements — and
meanwhile El Al planes
were flying back from
Tehran half-empty.
Allon spoke of reports
from Iran that Jewish
homes and businesses in
several cities were being
marked by Ayatoullah
Khomeini's-supporters for
eventual confiscation.
There were also reports of
ghettoes being set up and of
other ominous signs.
A former aliya shaliakh
to Iran told the Labor fac-
tion that many Iranian
Jews would convert to Islam
in order to save their lives
and property.
MK Uzi Baram spoke of
the government's "conspi-
racy of silence" motivated
by its desire not to offend
the Shah.
The Labor Party has
decided to set up its own
committee on Iranian
Jewry, under the au-
spices of the world Labor
Zionist Movement,
thought it is not yet clear
what measures this
committee proposes to
take in addition to those
taken by the government
and the Jewish Agency.

An Israeli who returned
from Iran last week claimed
that Jewish mothers there
pleaded with him to "take
our children to Israel" be-
_ cause they expect "terrible
things" to happen. Accord-
ing to Itzhak Meir, director
of the Yemin Orde Youth
School, some 300 Jewish
children have already been
brought to Israel from Iran,
leaving their parents be-
hind, and several hundred
other Iranian Jews are
waiting to be transferred to
Israel.
In Paris, Khomeini _said
that Jews will "enjoy all
rights and full religious
freedom" in an Iranian Is-
lamic republic.
Khomeini, who according
to close aides has been
shocked to hear that he is
being charged with anti-
Semitism (see. Commen-
tary, Page 2), concluded:
"Shortly the Islamic repub-
lic of _Iran will become
reality and all its citizens,
Jews, Christians and Mos-
lems will enjoy equal
rights." The Ayatoullah
added: "Those who say that
Jews will be discriminated
against under our rule are
enemies of the Iranian -
people — foreigners who

support the Shah."
Close aOisers to Kho:
meini said they were
neither anti-Israel nor
anti-Jewish and that the
"New Iran" might even
renew at some future
date some of its former
links with Israel.
They said that Israel will
have to fulfill, however,
three basic conditions first:
sign a peace treaty with the
Arab states, allow the
Palestinian refugees to re-
turn to their former homes,
and return the Moslem holy
places in Jerusalem to "Is-
lamic rule."
Some of the Ay'atoullah's
lesser advisers stressed that
they also expect Israel to
"punish" those Israelis who,
they -claim, had helped set
up the Shah's political
police, the Savak, and as
sisted him in running it.
"We have complete files
with all the pertinent de-
tails on the Israelis who
cooperated with the Savak.
We want the Israeli gov-
ernment to try and punish
them for' their crimes
against humanity" - say
some of these exiled Ira-
nians, but they would not -
produce their evidence.

assured that I'll do all I pos-
sibly can."
Ford took time out be-
tween formal receptions
to . visit the Jerusalem
television studios where
he watched a satellite
broadcast- of the Super
Bowl game in Miami.
Monday morning, he and
Mrs. Ford were taken on
a tour of East and West
Jerusalem. by Mayor
Teddy Kollek. They vis-
ited the Yad Vashem,
Herzl's grave and the
grave of Premier Golda
Meir.

the U.S. policy toward
Jerusalem, Ford refrained
from making any com-
ments.
The highlight of the
tour was the Fords' visit
to the Western Wall. Visi-
bly enjoying the warm
greetings, especially by
American tourists, the
Fords made their way to
the ancient wall. Or-
thodox Jews made an ex-
ception for the American
dignitaries and allowed
Betty Ford to touch the
holy remnant of the tem-
ple from the men's side of
the barrier.
