Carter Adviser Sanders Gives
SAM

BARNETT . 1
posed new demands. The
Concern over U.S.
policies of consistently
adhering to efforts to assure
fulfillment of agreements
reached at Camp David by
Anwar Sadat, Menahem
Begin and President Carter
is expressed in the massive
correspondence addressed
to the White House in appe-
als for action to assure the
security of Israel.
George Zeltzer, president
of the Jewish. Welfare Fed-
eration of Detroit, wrote a
letter of concern to senior
Presidential adviser Ed-
ward Sanders. In a reply on
behalf of the President,
Sanders wrote Zeltzer:
"The President has re-
cently assured Prime Min-
siter Begin that the United
States will play its role, as it
did at Camp David, with pa-
tience and perseverence,
and with the recognition
that both Israel and Egypt
have made difficult deci-
sions. The President also
indicated that he is keenly
aware of the commitment,
which the President and the
Prime Minister share, for a
secure, peaceful and pros-
perous future for the people
of Israel. I know that the
President's personal com-
mitment, as evidenced at
Camp David, remains un-
diminished. For that rea-
son, I am optimistic that
peace will come."
In an earlier message of
concern, John Shepherd,
president of the Jewish
Community Council of Met-
ropolitan Detroit, wrote to
Carter, inter alia:
"We are deeply disturbed
by the posture of the United
States as that of an advocate
of new Egyptian demands
concerning a peace treaty
with Israel.
"The Israeli Cabinet ap-
proved the draft treaty and
annexes prepared by the
United States, at the Blair
House negotiations in No-
vember. Sadat not only re-
jected the Blair House
treaty but has since inter-

American Administration
chose to soft-peddle this re-
jection and instead has
blamed the Israelis for not
giving in to those new Egyp-
tian demands.
"Israel obviously cannot
agree to the changes which
Sadat is now demanding. It
is imperative that our Ad-
ministration use its full
influence with President
Sadat to persuade him to
honor the text of the Nov. 11
draft treaty which all dele-
gations agreed to and the Is-
raeli Cabinet approved."
