towards Israel. Golda Meir
in her autobiography goes
to great lengths to tell of
Chinese hostility to Israel.
China refused to meet with
representatives from Israel
— wouldn't even answer the
letters. It was 100 percent
pro-Arab, helping Yasir
Arafat with arms. Mrs-.
Meir tells of the Chinese-
manufactured arms taken
from Arab terrorists.
So the news of a change of
attitude, if it is true, is very
welcome. Manhattan has a
little Chinatown. Who
hasn't heard of Mott St.? It's
the Chinese Broadway and
I have always been fasci-
nated by the Jews of Mott
St.
Did I hear you say there
are no Jews on Mott St.?
Well, if you think that, just
take a Manhattan tele-
phone directory and you -
will find quite a number of
Jews on Mott St. and the
area around it. There is a
Moon Jew and a,Mary Jew
and one business firm on
Mott St. is "Jew and Jew."
But the interesting thing

Chinatown is that they are
not Jews. They are Chinese.
Their family name is Jew.

The Chinese are a very
interesting people. Years
ago, when a Chinese
came to America, he al-
most always went into
the laundry business. As
a boy, I used to wonder
about that. And I as-
cribed it to their great
numbers. There are more
than 800 million Chinese,
so I thought, in China
most of them keep busy
washing shirts.
We Jewish kids used to
say too that Jews must have
had connections with the
Chinese. Fangschoen on
(the Yiddish expression
meaning to begin), we used
to say was a Chinese gen-
eral. Also there - was a
further identification of
Chinese wan ton soup with
Jewish kreplach. They are
supposed to taste alike.

Speaking about the fam-
ily name Jew, while no real
Jews have Jew as their fam-
ily name, the telephone di-
rectory shows , large num-
bers of Jews named Israel.
An interesting bit of news
recently was the report of
UFOs being sighted in
Jeusalem. Somehow, we
suspect, it was nothing
more than an extra large.
Hanuka candle.

According to New York
Times columnist William
Saphire, the Israel in-
telligence some months
back warned the CIA of
trouble ahead in Iran.
The new Iran regime has
announced it will not sell
any more oil to Israel.
We recall in that connec-
tion that many years back,
Jews had some trouble in
that same country but it
ended up very nicely with
the Jews eating Haman-
tashen.

Why be downhearted?
The other day someone
brought bad news to Henry
Kissinger. "It's too bad," he
wa3 told, "but yOu, Mr. Kis-
singer, can never be
President of the United
States."
"But I can be Emperor,"
replied Mr. Kissinger.
So if Kissinger can be
cheerful, why not others.
After all, there is no law re-
quiring one to be President!

Mapam Halts
Split With Labor

TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Mapam backed away from a
split with the Labor Party
when its Central Commit-
tee agreed to postpone next
month's party convention
indefinitely.
The convention was to
have acted on a recent
majority decision by
Mapam's Secretariat to
withdraw from the Labor
Alignment.
As a result of the agree-
ment, veteran Mapam
leader Meir Talmi said he
would stay on as Secretary
General for the time being
until a successor can be
found.
Talmi had threatened
to resign in a dispute over
the convention agenda
which reflected a split be-
tween Mapam's urban
constituents and its
kibutz members. The
former favor a break
with the Labor Party.
The kibutz members,
usually the more radical, in
this , case want
to preserve the Labor
Alignment and insisted
that the party convention
limit itself to political is-
sues. That would avoid de-
bate on the Secretariat's de-
cision to leave the Align-
ment, an internal matter.
Talmi viewed theif pro-
posal as an attempt to sub-
vert the Secretariat's deci-
sion and announced that he
would quit.
He confirmed that he
has received a letter
from Labor Party chair-
man Shimon Peres cal-
ling for Labor and
Mapam to discuss their
differences and to work
out guidelines for future
cooperation.
The Central Committee
decided to await the out-
come of these discussions
and submit them to a party
convention at some later
date for approval or rejec-
tion.

1949 Watergate
in Israel Told

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Ger-
son Rabinovich, a member
of Mapam and Israel chief of
operations for the Shin-Bet,
the secret service in the
early years of statehood, re-
zently revealed internal
spying activities.
Rabinovich told a TV in-
terviewer that in 1949, he
had the assignment of spy-
ing on political parties: the
