. . His new place eventu-
ally opened up on 14 Mile
and Orchard Lake Rd., but
it was a Chinese restaurant,
not Japanese . . . The years
went by and he still main-
tained that the steakhouse
would be a reality. . . .
Some people began to won-
der why Wing even men-
tioned Japanese steak
house when it seemed noth-
ing was being done.
However, little by little,
as time rolled on, his dream
was nearing the real thing
. . He already had some-
what of a Japanese eatery in
another part of the huge
building but the biggie was
yet to come.
Finally, last week, it hap-
pened . . . Wing Hong's
Tokyo Steak House became
the only one of its kind in
that area . . . attached to
his Chinese restaurant on
14 Mile and Orchard Lake
Rd.
A lot of work has gone
into the building — you
can readily see this . . .
walls with a grayish aged
effect . . . 160 seating
capacity in various
rooms with 16 teppan ta-
bles for folks to sit
around and watch their
food being prepared by
culinary artists doing
their showmanship be-
neath huge lighted vent
fans.
Steve, the chef at our ta-
ble, learned his teppanyaki
cooking in Japan and said
he was from Chicago . . .

AFTER THEATER MENU
PIANO & VOCAL STYLINGS BY
VI CAMPBELL
IN OUR SULTAN'S DEN
After theater menu available
cluded wooden salt and pep-
per shakers hitting each
other with a rapid staccato
beat almost like claves.
First he oiled a portion of
the teppan grill, cut and
fried shrimp, then cut both
onions and heavy zucchini
stalks . . . As each course is
prepared, Steve put it on the
plates of all at the table . . .
The trick is to do this cook-
ing fast enough so that
nothing gets cold . . . Then
came slices of mushroom,
chicken and steak cut from
a knife he keeps in a holster
at his side . . . and finally
fried bean sprouts . . .
Those knives, by the way,
can cut a hair in mid-air.
Previous to all this, the
waitress in a striped
Kimono brings everyone a
salad . . . and the chef
supplies all with little dis-
hes of sauces, one mellow
and the other mustardy
tart.
The waitress was sur-
prised when I asked for cof-
fee . . . and said they didn't
have any, which does seem
strange . . . Everyone at
our table was given a cup of
Japanese tea, weak but
good . . . I like plum wine
with Japanese food so had
her bring me a glass . . .
However, I sure missed not
having that cup of coffee.
ANOTHER LITTLE
CAESAR Pizza Station
will soon open on the
northwest . . . selling those
good pizzas made in 15 sec-
onds . . . It'll be at North-
land.
SOL'S DELI finally
opened yesterday on 11 Mile
and Evergreen in the Lat-
hrup Landing Center . . .
no waitresses . . . counter
style . . . but a lot of booths
for sit-down . . . and bus-
girls to give you your second
cup of coffee . . . Also a big
carry-out department . . .
and so the long wait for dad
and son Sol and Dave
Shpargel is at last over.
HAVING LUNCH re-
cently at Restaurant Dug-
lass in Farrell Plaza on
Southfield brought a touch I
haven't had in a while . . .
no need to get up for an in-
coming phone call . . .
When it came, maitre'd
Monsieur Joseph brought a
phone to the table and plug-
ged it in the wall.
Having a very pleasant
waitress like Janet Faber
does much for the food at
Restaurant Duglass . . . As
fine a chef as Duglass is,
good service is very impor-
tant in making sure people
enjoy his offerings . . . Her
smile and ability to answer
