Jordan Interested
In Inland Canal
Plan With Israel

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Jordanian government
expressed interest in an Is-
raeli plan to connect the
Mediterranean with the
Dead Sea by an inland
canal, Yediot Aharonot re-
ported Wednesday.
The plan calls for the dig-
ging of a canal from Haifa,
through the valley of Jez-
rell, the town of Beisan all
the way down to the Dead
Sea.
Details on the Jordanian
reaction to the plan were
presented Tuesday, accord-
ing to the paper, before a
' Knesset committee by
Shlomo Gur, director of the
team which plans the proj-
ect. The committee is a joint
body to the Knesset Secu-
rity and Foreign Affairs
Committee, the Finance
Committee and the Eco-
nomic Committee.
According to the plan,
the part of the canal be-
tween Haifa and Beisan
will allow for navigation.
Here it will link up with
the Jordan River, all the
way down to the Dead
Sea. By taking advantage
of the differences of
heights between the
Mediterranean and the
Dead Sea, a number of
power stations which can
be built along the Jordan
River will allow for
cheaper electricity.
The plan also calls for a
harbor to be built in Beisan,
which could serve Jordan as
well. Under the present
situation Jordan has only
one water outlet — the Port
of Aqaba on the Red Sea.
The Beisan port would give
the Jordanians access to the
Mediterranean.

NEW YORK — The
American Jewish Commit-
tee has joined with a
number of women's organ-
izaticins in urging the U.S.
Supreme Court to overturn
a Massachusetts law that
now gives veterans virtu-
ally • an absolute preference
in civil service employment
over all other applicants.
In a friend-of-the-court
brief, the groups charged
that the Massachusetts sta-
tute discriminated against-
women since veterans are
overwhelmingly male.
Further, they insisted, the
law, by providing this pref-
erence for veterans, as well
as failing to limit the
number of occasions and
( time lapse since discharge
from the armed forces in
which such preference may
be used, set up "a virtually
insurmountable barrier to
equal opportunity for
women."
A lower Federal district
court has already held the
state law unconstitutional.
This decision has been ap-
pealed to the Supreme
Court, which will hear
argument on the case in its
current term.
