WASHINGTON (JTA) —
A total of 86 members of
Congress have cabled
Soviet President Leonid
Brezhnev urging him "to
take immmediate steps to
alleviate the harsh condi-
tions of imprisonment" of
Soviet prisoner of con-
science Anatoly
Shcharansky.
The Jewish activist, who
has been denied visits by
members of his immediate
family and has been de-
prived of receiving many of
the letters written to him by
his mother, Mrs. Ida Mil-
grom, was sentenced last
July to 13 years in prison
and labor camp.
The Congressional
support for Shcharansky
was organized by Rep.
Robert Drinan(D-Mass.),
chairman of the Interna-
tional Committee for the
Release • of Anatoly
Shcharansky. Rep. Dri-
nan said he received a let-
ter from the prisoner's
wife, Avital, who resides
in Israel, asking that
President Carter discuss
her husband's case with
Brezhnev during the pro-
spective Soviet-
American summit con-
ference on the strategic
arms limitation treaty
(SALT).
Reg. Drinan said "I intent
to contact the White House
in strong and unqualified
support of Mrs. Shcharans-
ky's request."
Meanwhile, a new na-
tional census in the Soviet
Unioti, could show a Jewish
population of not more than
1.9 million, compared with
2.1 million in 1970.
This is the result of the
emigration of 180,000 Jews
since the last census in
1970, in addition to the de-

The only airlines flying non-stop 747's tc and fr3-n Israel
cline shown in previous de-
cades. However, the figure
will depend mainly on
whether there will be a
large change in national
identification in census dec-
larations. This is the con-
clusion of an analysis by Dr.
L. Hirszowicz of the Insti-
tute of Jewish Affairs.
Since the 1917 revolu-
tion, all the censuses
have omitted the religion
question and recognized
Jews as a nationality. Be-
tween 1959 and 1970, the
number of Jews dropped
by 117,000, through
natural causes and per-
haps through their
changing their national
identity. The loss be-
tween 1970 and 1979 must
be much greater — about
270,000, if one adds these
processes to the roughly
180,000 emigrants.
Another clue to the real
number of Jews will be in
the answers concerning a
person's national language
where it differs from his
first language. A further
decline in the number of
Yiddish speakers may be
expected, but, Hirszowicz
believes, the decline may be
overstated due to the way
the question is formulated.
In New York it was
learned that a play on
Jewish emigration, and its
tragic aftermath, was per-
formed in the Ukrainian
city of Vinnitsa, according
to information received by
the Greater New York Con-
ference on Soviet Jewry.
Entitled "Lost Horizon" the
play was simultaneously
broadcast on local radio .
The GNYCSJ said that
the play's plot centers on a
Jewish engineer who can-
not find a good job in the
Soviet Union. Out of anger
he emigrated to Israel,
where he still cannot find
the job he desires. His wife
starts to work for the rights
of the Palestinian people
and he turns her in to Israeli
authorities. In a subplot,
another Jew emigrates to
Israel at the request of the
woman he loves. The Jew
later discovers that she is a
prostitue, paid to lure him
out of the USSR.
Margy-Ruth Davis,
GNYCSJ executive direc-
tor noted that the play
follows a standard theme
in Soviet anti-Semitic lit-
erature, which openly
seeks to discourage
Jewish emigration by
trading on classic anti-
Semitic stereotypes.
"The women in the play
are meant to stand in con-
trast to each other," Mrs.
Davis said. "One stands for
the ideals of the Russian
people; she is betrayed by
her opportunistic and
money-grubbing Jewish
husband. The other woman
is the mold of the Jewess as
temptress and prostitute.
Recent anti-Semitic pieces
have identified Hasidic
women, especially, as pros-
titutes."
