Conference to protect
Jewish -lives in Iran, she
said.
She noted that Iranian of-
ficials were currently not
placing any obstacles in the
path of Jews wishing to
leave the country but that
only a small percentage of
Jews were taking the oppor-
tunity to do so.
Carl Glick, president of
HAIS, said his organization
was "actively encouraging"
Iranian'. Jews to emigrate to
Israel, although many Jews
in Iran felt they could "ride
out the storm."
Paul 'Bernick, executiv
director of the Americ
ORT Federation, reporte
that the ORT school in
Teheran was closed by the
lcoal ORT leadership, not
the government, as a safety
measure for the 'students
and faculty.

establish regular liaison
with U.S. Jewish groups
operating in Iran to
monitor the swiftly
changing situation there
and take immediate ac-
tion if required. The,
Presidents Conference
acted on the recom-
mendation of Mrs. Char-
lotte Jacobson, chairm-an
of the World Zionist
Organization-American
Section.
Mrs. Jacobson told the
meeting that the Presidents
Conference should , be pre-
pared to act immediately
should conditions deter-
iorate and threaten the
lives of the country's 80,000
Jews. If necessary, inter-
vention with the White
House and the State De-

major (Saad) Haddad and of
the Israeli Defense Forces,
in relation to the complete
deployment of UNIFIL in
its entire area of opera-
tions." UNIFIL, therefore,
is unable to help restore the
Lebanese government's
control over the area as
called for by Security Coun-
cil Resolution 425 which
created UNIFIL last spring,
Waldheim said.

"The assumptions on
which UNIFIL was set up
have not been fulfilled," he
reported, adding, "Indeed,
the attitude of the de facto
forces has, if anything, stif-
fened and the pattern of
threats and harrassing ac-
tions (against UNIFIL) has
persisted and increased. in
intensity."

Waldheim, recommend-
ing the renewal of UNIFIL's
mandate — which expires
today — for another period
of six months, concluded his
report by declaring that in
his view the present situa-
tion in south Lebanon can-
not continue indefinitely.
"Through no fault of its
own, UNIFIL has not been
in a position-to alter . . . a
situation which is neither
acceptable to the govern-,
ment of Lebanon nor com-
patible with the intentions
of the Security Council,"
Waldheim said.

Waldheim's statement
was made in the wake of
outcries in Israel follow-
ing the terrorist attack
Saturday morning on
guest house in Maalot.

Israeli sources are con-
cerned that UNIFIL will be

weakened further by the
almost certain withdrawal
of Iranian and French
troops from the UN forces.
The Israelis believe that the
terrorists will take advan-
tage of gaps in the UNIFIL
positions.

There have been several
outbreakS of fighting be-
tween the. terrorists and the
Christian' militia in south
Lebanon in recent days.
