"More youth, more adults, more Israelis and more Soviet Jewish refu- gees were served by ORT this year than at any other time in the 99-year history of ORT," Friedman de'clared in a report prepared for the National Conference of American ORT, scheduled for this weekend in New York. "If the greatest leap forward in 1978 -was in Is- rael," he indicated, "the upward spiral in ORT pro- grams_ has in fact been a worldwide phenomenon of the '70s." Total 1978 enrollment in all ORT programs through- out the world came to 97,776, Friedman reported. This compares with 84,000 in 1977, or an increase in this single year of 14,000 students and trainees, of whom 12,000 represent a rise in ORT Israel. Friedman noted that in the perspective of what has been happening in expanded ORT services since the beginning of the '70s, ORT enrollment has added 40,000 persons, or ■ An Urgent Call to Congregations, Organizations and individuals . . . Zvi Tomkiewicz, executive dired- tor of the Mizrachi office in this area, reported that the list of needy who are dependent on the -Mizrachi Mo'os Hitim Fund for means to ob- serve the approaching Passover traditionally has grown. He urged more generous support of the fund by Greater Detroit Jewry. - Phillip Stollman, a national leader in Mizrachi, stated on a recent return froM Israel that the devaluation of the Israel pound and the inflationary growth in Israel have added to the burdens that call for assistance to the less affluent in Israel.. "Our Mo'qs Hitim Fund makes it possible for thousands to secure the necessary Passover foods, and the help given by Detroiters annually assists hundreds who depend upon us for aid," Stollman said. Stollman and Tomkiewicz said that food certificates, redeemable at the Super Sol markets in Israel would be distributed to the needy. .- Stollman said this year marks the 31st anniversary of Tom- kiewicz's service to Mizrachi, and as executive director of Detroit Friends of Bar-Ilan University. When it is considered that Israel ORT student body numbered 34,394 in 1969-, it becomes apparent that the greatest leap forward in this decade has been in ORT Is- . rael, where the prograth has practically doubled during this period, an achievement of considerable note."
